I am back at work after IUI#4, but there is a little bit of a catch...
DH had to drop off his sample at 7:30am this morning, then my IUI was at 9:40am, so we had some time to kill in between. Luckily, DH was off today, so we went out for breakfast. We were talking about his mom's birthday party this weekend and what to get her for a gift, when the conversation shifted to money.
DH gets paid weekly at an hourly rate, but he gets paid by the work, not by how long he is there. He works 4-5 days per week from 7:30am until 6:30pm and often goes in on his day off, working 5-6 days per week. He gets paid flat rate for jobs. For example, an oil change only pays 0.5 hours, which comes out to less than $10. A transmission might pay 6-8 hours, whether it takes DH 3 hours or 10 hours to finish, so theoretically, it is expected to make more than 10 hours worth of money in a ten hour day.
Lately, there has been very little work. They had a recall that sustained them for a couple of months, but work has really slowed down. DH has always made more than me, but last week, his check was $450. We're used to his checks ranging from $600-$1000. People at work are murmuring that it's going to be like this for a while and that they should expect to make "lifestyle changes," or even expect layoffs.
DH is very reliable and brings in a lot of revenue for the company, but he is one of the newer guys. He has been working there for nine years, but he has only been a technician for six. If there are layoffs, I am a little worried. More likely though, his paychecks are just going to suck, and he is the major breadwinner.
Despite all my hard work and all my degrees (my Seven Sisters bachelors and my Ivy League masters are costing me more than they're making me...), I still haven't broken into the $40,000s.
Seriously, I feel like we just can't catch a break. After I did all that research and found a better deal for IVF, DH tells me how bad business is. For now it seem like IVF is off the table again, so I am crossing everything that this IUI, or even the next one, finally works...
:::vent over:::
Thanks for listening...
