Can't drink out of a sippy cup

My son will be 10 months this week and still can't drink out of a sippy cup! I have tried a 100 different types and all he does is bite the nipple part. Anyone else have a LO like this? How did you teach them to drink from one? It seems so similar to a bottle, I don't understand why he is having such a hard time...

Have you tried a straw sippy cup? Juliana took to those kind right away.

  • Straw sippy cups work better for us.  Have you removed the valve? It makes it easier to drink from and easier to learn.
  • We did the straw too.  It drives my husband crazy because he thinks the straw is messier but I think it's a lot more convenient.

  • We use a straw sippy. Works perfect and really convenient when were out at restaurants I accidently leave the sippy at home! She uses regular straws like a champ.

  • My DD is 11 months and won't do it either.  She was never interested in holding her own bottle either so i think that is part of our problem.  I can usually get her to do a few drinks, but then she just chews.  I'm just planing to keep offering and eventually I hope she'll figure it out.

  • We are in the same boat.  DD is almost 10 months old and I've been trying to give her a sippy since 7 months.  Her pedi some kids never take a sippy and just drink out of  a regular cup.  She said there is no reason that a kid needs to drink from a sippy except it makes our life as a parent easier (you don't have to be there holding the cup so they can drink).

I tried one with a straw but it was really hard to suck out of.  I'm not sure if it is worth trying a different straw one or not.  I'm kind of over trying out different sippy cups!

  • DS wouldn't drink out of a sippy cup either, he would just chew on the spout.  Someone posted right around the time I got fed up with buying different brands that their child  went right to the straw so I bought that next.  He took to a sippy straw cup right away so we just use that now.

  • C has tried Playtex (with and without membrane) and Nuk sippies, and the Playtex straw cup; at almost 11mos with over 2mos of trying he still doesn't 'get' it. In about 2wks, we'll begin transitioning to WCM, and I think I'll also start changing a bottle every few days to a sippy, and hopefully it will click once he realizes he's not getting the liquid any other way.

  • We had the same problem, but DS eventually took to the take and toss sippy cups.  They are the only ones he will use.

  • Our LO isn't great with a sippy either, but he likes to drink out of a regular cup (it's messy, but he  loves it) and he also uses a regular straw.

  • Our LO will drink out of a sippy but only about 1 1/2 oz - In a bottle she'll take 7 oz.  I want her to have the liquids, and I end up going back to the bottle.

  • We never had great luck with a regular sippy, we use these and she does great with them.
