Cloth Diapering

Do you ever wonder why you are making life less simple with this?

By this of course I mean cloth diapering.  There are a few things I really like about it, but it's been sort of a love/hate relationship for me since the beginning, and I keep having moments where I feel like life has gotten so much more stressful with a baby in general... why am I making it even harder by dealing with cloth diapers?  Extra washing, it takes longer to change LO and get the cloth in the wrap all situated, they don't fit with his clothes as well.  Ugh.  I'm trying to convince myself to stick with it, but I'm feeling frustrated.

Re: Do you ever wonder why you are making life less simple with this?

  • Babies in general just get easier.  Hang in there!
  • For me, life is *more* simple with CDs. They're just as easy as disposables, I'm not dealing with added $ and trash, and I don't have to wonder what's on my kid's butt.

It's an extra 2-3 loads of laundry a week. NBD. It doesn't take any longer to change DD, unless you count trying to find a diaper to match her outfit ;) Her clothes have always fit fine.

What are your specific frustrations? Are your wraps the wrong size? Is your LO growing out of their CDs?

  • Maybe you just need to try a different diaper. I know I definitely get in moods where I don't want to deal with a certain type of diaper sometimes. What are you using now and what don't you like and what do you like about it? Maybe we can give you some suggestions on what to try to make your life easier.

This. You're still in that survival mode, with an unpredictable infant and little sleep. Hang in there, it will get easier!

  • I think CDing gets easier each day. We are almost to 5 months and I'm finding it to be extremely easy and I definitely had doubts in the beginning. Are you using OS diapers on? The fit and bulk of these definitely get better once your LO gets older.

This. Life, in general, will be more manageable soon. Don't worry!

    This.

I <3 CDing. It might take a tiny bit longer to put them on her when she's feeling wiggly during a change but other than that I find it easier than disposables. They're *so* much better for DD's bottom and I get the added bonus of them being cute!

It's stressful with a baby, especially if this is your first and you're trying to figure everything out. It gets easier with time, it just takes patience and practice. Lots of it.

  • I personally think it's simpler than trying to figure out how to keep my kid from blowing out of disposables all the time and then having to clean whatever surface he was sitting/laying on as well.
  • i don't think cd's are simpler but for me they are worth it.

hope things get less stressful for you soon.

^ What she said.  I have a coworker who CDs... her and I have talked a lot about CD'ing in gneral.  She's actually taken a few breaks from CD'ing and does some gDiapers and 7th Gen disposables - definitely not "hard core" like I am.  We both agree that CD'ing definitely requires more effort and dedication.  But we love it. Obviously me a little more so but the fact is we both make the choice to put in the effort because we like it.

  • In the beginning for me I would have to put that cloth diaper, take it off because it was on wrong, put it back on, then realize I still didn't get it right when ds would leak everywhere. I don't even know when it happened exactly but llittle by little it just became natural and is super easy now. A lot of CD is trial and error but to me was so worth it in the end. Even washing the diapers in no big deal anymore since I pop them in the wash during a nap and wear ds facing out when I switch them to the dryer and hang up the covers. He loves watching that process so that made it even better. In the end you have to do what is best for you but I would give it a few weeks and see how you still feel.
  • If you're feeling overwhelmed (and it's easy to with a newbie like you have!), take a break and use disposables for a while. A healthy/happy/whole mama is more important than cloth diapering.

  • i too feel like CD is easier. I never run out of diapers, dont have to go to the store to get them and if I want more, cottonbabies delivers them to my door for free! I dont have near as much trash and dont have to budget the weekly money needed for sposies. Plus I hate dragging my kid to walmart and would dread doing this just for diapers. The only time we use sposies is when we go on weekend trips or vacations where we wont have a washing machine handy to us. It will get easier! I agree you are still in survival mode. I feel like sposies are harder now, I get so frustrated with them! I babysit for my niece and am constanly putting hers on backwards or getting the tabs stuck somewhere. I will say that sposies are more compact and fit in the diaperbag better, but we just bring an extra bag and throw in the car.

Honestly, CD's make my life easier.  Washing is 2nd nature and has been a breeze from the start.  I loathe the thought of disposables.

Brand new babies are a ton of work but, rest assured, they get easier as they grow.  They'll start fitting into diapers better, you'll become speedy at changing, you'll be changing less often, etc.

    hang in there!

  • I'm sorry you're feeling frustrated :-(  Hang in there.  For me CDing is easier than sposies too like others have said.  However in the beginning we were using prefolds (and the wrong size prefolds at that) with PUL covers and I really was not enjoying CDing!  Now that we have options that work better for us (pocket diapers, all in ones, and some fitteds with wool covers) I very much enjoy CDing.  I hope it gets better and as Jenny said, if you need to take a break from it for awhile then do so.  Giving yourself a little break does not mean admitting defeat!

  • The prefolds and covers do take longer than putting on a disposable, but using a pocket takes NO EXTRA TIME. I currently only have two pockets in use: a mini blueberry and a FB OS. I keep the diaper sized to the right leghole/waist sizes and it is a breeze! My husband actually prefers prefolds, which I will never understand, but we are enjoying it none the less!

I hope it gets better for you. The laundry routine the first week or two drove me crazy, but it really has gotten easier.. last night I loaded the washer right before I sat down to eat dinner and did the cold rinse, then the hot wash and by the time the baby was asleep they were clean and put into the dryer and then off to bed I went! :)

I do find it easier though using cloth than dealing with multiple rashes.  After one bout of yeast, I hope I never have to deal with that again!
