1st tri glucose test because Lilly was a big baby

I'm so nervous!  For a few reasons, a big one being that Lilly was 9lbs9oz when she was born, they are making me take a glucose test this week.

I guess I'm nervous for a few reasons...first I am nervous because they are having me do it because of my labor/delivery with Lilly so it makes me wonder if they missed something with her and so that's why they are testing early?  I passed the 20something week glucose pretty easily though so idk.

And I'm also nervous because I don't know if I can get that drink down.   Last time I was 26 weeks, I think so I was feeling better...I'm seriously nervous about how sick this is going to make me feel and if I can even keep it down!

And I'm nervous I won't pass!

Did anyone have to take the 1st tri glucose test for their 2nd pregnancy and pass fine?  Renee is the only one I can think that gave birth to a big baby and is pregnant again...you here, Renee? Anyone else?

Re: 1st tri glucose test because Lilly was a big baby

  • I actually requested the 1st tri test with my second pregnancy because I had GD the first time around.  I passed both tests and ended up not getting GD with the second pregnancy.

  • Hopefully with the lower #'s I'll still pass!  I wasn't close with Lilly...passed pretty easily but who knows this time around!

And good to know Risy!  I hope, hope, hope I pass!  And I hope I can keep that drink down and not feel like total crap!

  • With Q I had to take it in 1st tri (and again in 2nd) don't know if it was because of my age, my weight, or because of my OB being cautious
  • Not sure if Renee took it in the first tri but she did the 3 hour both times (i think). But I know she just did the 3 hr with this one

  • I requested one with D because I felt it better to find out early. I got a 80 both times. With the twins I had three of them (yuck) and scored between 90-96 each time. I think regardless if you don't pass knowledge is power and best to know early. I think you will be fine, lots of dust.
  • Here's what happened with me:

Pregnancy w/ Madison: Failed 1 hour. Passed 3 hour. Had 10 lb. 5 oz. healthy baby girl.

In the early days of this pregnancy, I asked my OB if it was possible that I had undiagnosed GD with Mads. She assured me that based on how well I passed the 3 hour test and because Maddie's glucose levels were normal (they tested them shortly after she was born because of her size), that she was confident I didn't have GD, just a big kid.

So this time around, she didn't have me test early. Did the one hour at 24 weeks... failed. Took the 3 hour this past Friday (26 weeks) and am waiting for the results. I have this feeling that I'm going to fail, but we'll see.

I think testing early is good. And I think knowing (rather than trying to work the test) is good, too. I have been craving carbs of every shape, size, and color. I thought about changing up my eating habits the week of the 3-hour, but decided to eat completely normally aside from the fasting since I'd rather know and take good care of myself than just pass the test.

Wow, I really ended up rambling!! I've been thinking about this a lot since I'm in the wait to find out my results! To sum up, I'm thinking that maybe Lily's glucose numbers were off a bit at birth? I'd ask your doc exactly why they suspect undiagnosed GD, or if they don't expect that, then why the early test?

Did you need to take the 3-hr test the first time?  9.9 isn't all that big to me.  I've had a number of healthy moms who just built awesome nuchal cords and make bigger babies.
  • Thanks everyone!  I'm feeling a little less nervous about it but I'm just really hoping I pass.

Kaiser has this new thing and I had to fill out this form and if I marked any of the questions yes, then I needed to do the 1st tri screen. I can't remember all the questions I answered yes to...there were 3 but the couple I do remember where was your baby born larger than 9lbs and did you hemorrhage.

Lilly's glucose #'s were ok when she was born...so I think they are only basing me taking this test based on her size and the hemorrhaging.  But when the lady was checking my paper, as soon as she read the 9lb9oz, she immediately said I needed it so I think that's the biggest reason.

I didn't need to take the 3hr last time either....passed the 1 hour in the 2nd tri so I just don't know...but might as well find out anyway!...I'm just hoping I can keep the drink down and pass!

Celyn- I lol at 9lbs9oz not being big...I know it's not huge but it's bigger than average and my vagina disagrees and says she was a big ass baby! LOL

  • This is super interesting. Ellie was big (9lb, 2oz) and they tested her glucose after she was born, and I always wondered if I was undiagnosed GD, or borderline. My OB switched to the 2 hour test while I was pg and every appt they told me "you barely passed" b/c my 3rd value was right at the cut off. For the 2 hour test, every value has to be under the threshold or you fail, and there is no 3 hour, you either pass the 2 hour or follow the GD diet.

I wonder if they'll do things differently next time I'm pg.

    Anyway, good luck H!

  • Sometimes it is just a thing with families. I was 9.4 oz my sister was the smallest of all kids in my family but she came 3.5 weeks early and was 8.5oz.  My cousins were 9.6oz and 10.2oz.

    EJ was 9.4.5oz

I had GD.  Dr does not contribute his size to it at all because 1) they run in my family and 2) I managed my GD "ideally" meaning I only spiked once in the entire time I had to manage it and I was able to get it down within an hour by taking a long walk.

As a side note, perhaps this is just my experience so take it with a grain of salt...

I KNEW I had GD, I knew it before I had it because of how I felt when I ate.  After I knew I had it, I could tell you exactly when I had enough carbs and when I had to much and when I had not enough.  I felt like complete crap when I spiked a 200.  I thought I was gonna be sick I was so bad feeling.  I felt amazing when I was rocking 80-90's and I felt terrible when I was in the 60's-70's.  I could guess my BS before it showed up on my monitor.

Granted, the awareness became stronger the further in my pregnancy I got, I was still doing pretty well until 30 weeks and after 30 weeks my GD was what I just described.

So all in all what I am saying is...while I know it can go undiagnosed, and I am sure it affects each woman differently in terms of feeling....I really do in my heart believe you know if you have it once you get far enough along because the glucose/carbs make such a HUGE impact on how you feel minute to minute during pregnancy.

If you do turn out to have GD....it really isn't that bad.  I actually feel like it was the best possible thing for me because I would have probably eaten myself into oblivion had I not had to control myself.  I also have continued to eat similarly because I just overall feel better having 6 smaller meals (though I usually only do 4-5 now).  Just know that if you do have GD you will have to get tested after pregnancy and with Kaiser you get tested every 2 years for the first 4-6 years post a child.  or at least that is what they do with me....

  • Thanks for all the info K!  I think that is one big reason I am nervous about it...I know NOTHING about it at all.

I really don't think I had it with Lilly so I'm not sure why I'm so nervous...I just think it's the unknown...

  • My son was 10 lbs 7 oz (surprise!) at delivery and I passed my GD test last time. He did not have any blood sugar problems at birth. This pregnancy, my doc had me screened at 16 weeks and now next week. I was nervous, but I passed the one hour at 16 weeks. I don't think I have GD, I just grow big babies. That said, I was nervous, but I also knew it was better to find out if I did have it.
