Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Ugh, LO is biting herself..

One of my girls has two bottom middle and two top middle teeth. The other day I noticed what I thought was her sucking on her wrist. Then when she pulled away I noticed it was red and there were little teeth marks.

There is never a shortage of things to chew on around here, both soft and hard. But I've seen her bite herself a couple of times since then (even when surrounded by toys) and once she made herself semi-cry.

Anyone else's LO do this? Is there a solution or do you just hope that they will get the point once they bite hard enough to hurt?

  • When he was younger, DS would suck on his arm hard enough to leave hickeys.  The doctor said he would stop when it hurt him and just to make sure he didn't break the skin.  I think you just let her figure it out.  Babies are odd birds sometimes.

  • DS bit himself pretty hard when he was 2 and his baby sister came home.  He was pretty upset and this was his acting out.  It is a self-limiting behavior (it hurts!) so he did it for a while, and quit.  Since then he's done it about 3 times when he's really frustrated and wants attention (which he doesn't get---we ignore it really consistently).

    HTH!
