Ihearttab and katie4253

Hey ladies,

I know you girls talked about mastitis in a previous post.  I called my doctor at 5 am this morning after being in excruciating pain all yesterday and he is pretty sure it's mastitis.  I am on an antibiotic now, just wondering how long it took for y'all to feel better.  Like back to normal?  Thanks girls!

  • UGH!  You poor girl.  It sucks so bad.

Do you have any parts of your breast that feel harder?  If so, you probably have some clogged ducts too.   I had terrible clogged ducts that I couldn't get unclogged and that lead to the infection.  The only thing that finally worked to clear them was to have H help me.  I pumped while H massaged the area and worked the clogs toward my nipple (all while I cried).  I applied heat a lot to get them out.

It was about 2-3 days before my boob felt normal again.   Even once I got the clog out, it hurt.  It felt like someone hit me with a bat on my left boob.  Just terrible.

I hope you feel better soon.  Pump and nurse as much as you can.  Massage your boob to feel for clogs and try to work them out too.  Mastitis is an infection of the duct, so massage won't help there.  But, it will help if you have underlying clogs.

  • I had it with my first. You have my sympathies. Disposable diapers actually make great heating pads because they hold a lot of warm water. Fill one with warm water and it cups nicely around your breast. Just make sure to obviously wash off before pumping or feeding again. Also watch for loose stools in your LO. The antibiotic gave my DD the runs. I had projectile baby poo if I had an open diaper and she went.

True story.  This happened to us too.  LOL!

  • Thanks for the great advice ladies; y'all are awesome!  And I will check for clogged ducts soon.  DH got me a heat compress earlier which feels much better, but great idea with the diapers.

  • Sorry I'm just now logging on to see this- I started feeling noticeably better by day 3 or 4. Until the meds started working, I would lay a hot compress on the infected breast before and during each feeding. I would also wake up before Lucy each morning to take a REALLY hot shower and let the water fall on my chest to help the milk down. My midwives also recommended 800 mg of Ibuprofen (usually 4 of the over-the-counter stuff) or prescription Motrin every 6 hours for the pain and inflammation.

I'm so sorry you're dealing with this. It truly is miserable. Feel better soon.

Oh, and I'm happy to say that it's just over a week later and I finally don't HATE breastfeeding. I actually kinda love it now. Just thought I'd share in case you're feeling discouraged. :)
