Fibroids- should I be worried?

I had an Ultrasound 2 weeks ago at an open imaging place, so my primary care physician wrote the referral. I also had an ultrasound yesterday at my obgyn's office but the doctor doesn't do the ultrasound and he didn't talk to me after.

Today, my primary calls me about the ultrasound (from 2 weeks ago) and said I had two small fibroids. The obgyn never said ANYTHING about this. When I said that, she said it must be fine then. Should I be worried about this?

First you will make sure that OB and DR get on the same page to be certain. It is my understanding that many women have fibroids and they don't affect the pregnancy at all. I think it's pretty rare but a fibroid can degenerate and you'll have a fever and some pressure in the abdomen but even if that is the case they'll just put you on bed rest for a few days and give you tylenol.

  • Yeah, by OB kinda sucks, I am in the middle of choosing a new one and definately plan to ask. I just hope it doesn't take too long to get an appointment with someone new.

I switched OB's during my first pregnancy. They are good about getting the pg women in for appt's when you've already been receiving prenatal care - be sure to let them know that.

  • I knew I had fibriods even before I was pg with my first, I had extra u/s and monitoring as one of the fibriods grew during my pregnancy. I ended up having a scheduled c-section because of the location of the growing fibriod. But lots of women have them and they are benign and cause no problems during pregnancy. Hopefully you get an OB soon and they can help ease any concerns you have.

  • I had my 1st U/S yesterday and they found both small and large fibroids.  I knew I had them for years (really fun for periods!), but I wasn't sure if I still had them.  She said they were not located near where the embryo is, so it looked ok.  They will just have to monitor the growth at each ultrasound to ensure the fibroids to not get in the way of the babys growth.  I think we will be ok :) Good luck!

  • I am pregnant with my 2nd child and I have fibroids.  I had them with my first pregnancy and they didn't cause any issues.  They did grow rapidly during early pregnancy but then stopped after baby took over.  I had to have a scheduled C-section with my first due to the fibroids and due to the fact that I had a previous fibroid surgery.  I'm also due to have a scheduled c-section with this baby as well because the fibroids are now blocking my cervix!  Go figure!
