I know it's in the faqs, but I have overnight solution questions. Are GM and a wool cover still the standard? I have been seeing some new abbreviations that I don't know. Plus my DH is having a hard time believing that a fitted and wool cover will work for our DS who is a super heavy wetter. We currently are using GMD prefolds and will use two of them and just a cover and we have to change him at least once during the night, and he still wakes up soaked. If he does STTN and we don't change him he's leaked all over. TIA!
Re: Overnight solution
Not necessarily a GM, but a fitted and wool and are a good combo. Even if the fitted is wet in the morning the wool should just be damp, not wet. That being said, my GM good.night is the best performer of my overnight fitteds.
The overnight fitteds have a few layers inside that help absorb the moisture. I have a feeling that will work better than 2 prefolds.
ETA: I also use pockets at night when I'm not in the mood for fitteds + wool. BG3.0 with 3 layers of hemp wrapped in a prefold usually works for me.
GL!
I'm pretty sure you'll get suggestions for various fitteds + wool.
I've been trying various pockets and haven't come up with a solution that lasts all night every night.
I'm the opposite of the fitteds + wool camp. I love pockets for ON. I usually use a BG 4.0 or Kawaii Good Night Heavy Wetter. I use a BG microfiber insert and an AFFF tri-folded (or a HH hemp w/extra oval). Her inserts are saturated in the morning.
We have tried fitteds and I don't love them. DD sleeps on her stomach and the fitted (and Sbish) is usually so saturated her stomach is wet in the morning. I usually use a fleece liner, but the wetness spreads beyond the liner (to the sides). The wool is damp and so are her PJs. I just don't see how that could be comfortable for her. I know I'm in the minority here!
Pockets only worked for us until he started rolling around and sleeping in all sorts of strange positions (around 5months.)
These days, I have two different solutions.
1) TT (twinkie tush) fitted diaper with Jillybeanjar (etsy) wool shorties OR a WCW soaker.
2) B4 (bububebe) fitted diaper with Jillybeanjar (etsy) wool shorties OR a WCW soaker.
I also add extra oomph to the diapers with the addition of a AFFF (artsy fartsy foo foo hemp insert) or these fleece/zorb/bamboo inserts from DD when she used to make pockets. They actually are awesome because they're fleece on top for stay dryish feeling, then zorb and then hemp or bamboo.
Fitteds work really well for us as he's still nursing multiple times in the night (so he's soaking himself) but no leaks!
If you're wary of wool, you can check out fleece covers as well. I used fleece before I became addicted to wool. I recommend Monster Fluff Studio on Hyena Cart.
We had major issues with overnight CDing in the beginning - so much so that DH hated CD's for a while. We had at least one major leak each night and we were so frustrated we didn't know what to do. Thankfully we found what works for DS (I'll list that in a bit).
However, even while trying to figure out what CD night solution would work for DS, and as we were getting close, and comfortable with a solution, we even tried Huggies overnight heavy wetter for a while (one box). DH thought that was a solution, but I hated that some of the gel got on DS's bottom and that the diaper was 10 pounds by morning. DS was nursing 1-3 times at that point.
Even when DS was nursing 1-3 times, we finally found what works. We mainly use a BG 4.0 stuffed with the BG microfiber insert, plus an additional microfiber insert, plus an AFFF (hemp insert tri folded).
However, with the BG stuffed so much, it makes the legs gap a lot - therefore, we use a wool soaker over the BG. We have been using our one woolybottoms soaker every night for a long time now, but we also have a Disana soaker as well.
As others have mentioned, we also sometimes use fitteds and wool at night too. I have two B4's that we use. I use all inserts that come with the diaper and then add an AFFF. Then we use the Disana or WB soaker. I also put a fleece liner so that DS doesn't get as wet. I don't like the thought of him being saturated all night long.
I felt that DS was a very heavy wetter in the beginning and DH and I were so frustrated b/c we had wet sheets every morning. When we first had leaks we were using a BG 3.0 and a Fuzzibunz perfect size stuffed with one MF insert and 1 joeybunz hemp. The inserts weren't enough absorbency for DS b/c they were all saturated just after a few hours and then he leaked out of the diaper. His PJ's and sheets were sopping wet.
All of DS's inserts are still saturated in the morning, but the pocket diaper with wool on top seems to be our solution for now.
I want to note though that even in fitteds with DS left being wet all night, we've never ever had an issue with a red bottom or diaper rash. I never even use diaper cream on DS. But now when using a fitted at night I always put a fleece liner in it.
I just told DH tonight that I'm hoping to be able to eventually use a pocket diaper with less inserts so that we don't have to put the wool on top. My mom calls DS a weeble (a Fisher Price weeble) when she sees him in his overnight diaper and wool. :-)
Best wishes finding something that works for your LO. It's such a good feeling when something finally works.
