now im curious. what are you GOING for? If I was a teacher and saw it Id guess Mary. but it would be just a guess.
And if it IS Mary...please just go for Mary. Same if its Marie...go with Marie.

Oh dear...my DH seems to be mostly right. At least at the moment.
Mairi is the Scottish form of Mary, but is pronounced MAH-ree, or MAHR-ee. So no, I wouldn't be giving Mary or Marie a youneek spelling.
Now do I tell DH and hurt my case for the name? He's being uber picky!
I would NEVER have gotten to point be (MAHR-ee) from point a (Mairi) Even after your dd would correct me, Id still screw it up.

There's actually a traditional Celtic song called "Mairi's Wedding". Though sometime's it's transcribed as Marie's Wedding, like with this video: https://youtu.be/JddRkt_FYDY

If you have strong ties and a Scottish heritage, go for it. But if you aren't Scottish and you don't go to Scottish festivals, skip Mairi.
We do. I grew up Scottish Highland dancing and going to festivals, and my grandfather influenced the whole family (we're mostly Scottish, then Irish). My DH is mostly Irish and we would like to stick with a Celtic name. His preference is Mairead.

Don't feel bad...a lot of them are crazy spellings.
The trouble is, the only 2 girl names my DH even brought up are Finley and Kenzie. Finley I used to be on board with, but now would probably only use it begrudgingly, and Kenzie is a definite no because 1) we know too many MacKenzies, and 2) I never liked the name MacKenzie to start with.
Boys? No problem, likely Trevor, backup Callum. But odds in our family favor the peanut being a girl, so we need to be prepared.

My-ree. Mai as in Mai Tai, Ri as in every other name that ends in an "i."
And I don't know if asking here among a bunch of name nerds is really testing the theory.
However, your baby will be growing up in a world where people name their children bizarre made up things with bizarre made up spellings and pronounce whatever they want however they want (cf. Ryleigh and M'kaylah and Aiden/Aidan/Aden/Aidynne) so I suspect MOST people are going to have to ask for clarification on name spellings and pronunciation in the future.

I was torn between Mary and Mah ree ... I voted Mary but wasn't 100% sure. I think yo have to tell DH - he'll find out eventually anyways if everyone is mispronouncing your baby's name I wonder if there is another spelling that would work for it?!

I have a friend named Mari ( Pronounced: Mar-ee). I love her name but I've never considered the spelling of her name confusing. I'm not sure if that pronunciation is close?? I did chose Mary for the pronunciation of the name you posted. If I liked the name that much I would find a way to spell it so that the pronunciation wasn't butchered!
I prefer Mairi to Mairead. I just think it's prettier.
I agree that Mairi sounds nicer, but it's more likely to be confused with Marie and Mary because of how it looks. If I saw Mairead, I would definitely stop and ask the correct pronunciation before even attempting it.
In all likelihood, though, people will still need correcting, so go for the one you love the most.
I voted My-ree for how it would be pronounced but that was after looking at it and sounding it out. That would be hard for a little girl to have to sit there and watch people sound her name out before saying it (that is if they even take the effort to try)
ETA: so I saw that I was wrong in the pronunciation. So, essentially your daughter would live her life having her name constantly mispronounced. (From someone with a difficult maiden name, I know that is a real annoyance)

The only Mairi I know says it MAHR-ee, like Marie with opposite emphasis.
