I have severe chest congestion and a very dry cough. When I lie down to sleep, I wheeze a little and I keep coughing like crazy. I feel like I can hardly breathe. I want to use some sort of expectorant or something like Vaporub, but I wasn't sure if they are safe for the baby. Does anyone know?

Re: Chest congestion?
Sorry you're feeling so sick. I don't think you can take any meds safely unless your doctor thinks so. Have you tried drinking warm fluids like decaffinated tea or coffee? Have you also tried sitting in steamed bathroom for a bit? The warm, moist air will help to bring up that nasty flem that's clogging your chest. Have you also tried eating a spoonful of honey? It's thick and will coat your throat and at least for me, works far better than over the counter cough suppressants. And if you can't sleep comfortably lying down, sleep propped up so that you and the baby get enough air. If you really feel horrible, you can always call your doctor and let him/her take it from there. Hope this helps and hope you feel better soon :-)
