What to do to keep dogs quiet during birthday party?

We have two dogs and I'm thinking of putting them in the basement during the party, one of the bigger benefits being it's going to be about 83 that day and they'll be cooler in the basement. But, even though they're beyond friendly, they're going to bark when they hear people and then they'll probably bark because they want to be with the people.

Any ideas how to keep them quiet?

  • You could try to make sure they have plenty of distractions down there, but I know that in that situation nothing in the world would distract my dogs from the fact they were missing out on something.  If you don't think you can ignore their barking during the party, maybe you could look into taking them to doggy daycare for a few hours.

  • Is there a doggie daycare you could take them to for the day?  We did that when we had our rottie & it wore her little arse OUT!  If nothing else, they will be quieter.  HTH
  • You could make them both steaks with big bones in them. That would keep my dog occupied all day. =)

  • A day at doggie daycare would probably be the easiest.  If you need to keep them home, I would take them for a looong walk before the party to get them tired.  Give them a treat to keep them occuppied like a stuffed Kong that you freeze ahead of time.  Put their beds/crates down there and plenty of toys. And some water.
  • We're going to put our dogs in the basement during DD's party, and they will just have to bark.  That's just what they do, no matter how many distractions we give them.  But, everyone knows we have 3 dogs, so they expect some barking when they come to our house :)
