The diaper rash that won't go away

Hi ladies,

I have a 3 month old daughter who was breastfeeding but we had to stop at 2 months b/c she had some major food sensitivities.  B/c her little tummy was in an uproar she was having diarrhea and reflux but since starting Nutramigen that has gotten much better (a little refluxy still, she's taking zantac twice a day) Anywayz.... the problem is she has an ongoing diaper rash.  I am using expensive hypoallergenic diapers, washing her bum after bms, using triple paste and that darn thing won't go away.  Thinking to bug the dr. about giving me some sort of prescription ointment.  The dr. seems to think that the diaper rash is caused by her still sensitive digestive system and will probably take a long time to go away : .

Air her little bum, just put a towel under her.  The air will help dry it out.

  • We had a bad case around two months. We gave her naked time in between diaper changes, and the pedi gave us a prescription ointment that knocked it out in two days. She also rec Dr. Smith's diaper rash ointment for over the counter once it cleared.

  • DD pedi gave us nystatin cream to knock out her diaper rash that wouldn't go away. Once that one cleared up we haven't had another one.

  • I was told that some diaper rashes are caused by yeast, and need a special prescription cream. I've never dealt with this before though.

  • Is it a rash or yeast?  If it is yeast, you need an antifungal, and lots of sunlight time.  With yeast it is also very easy to reinfect.  We are almost done with a 2 week 4-6 x a day application of Nystatin for a yeast infection.  Good luck.

  • I had a problem with that also.  Was using sensitive diapers and sensitive wipes and still had diaper rash.  Got the special yeast ointment and still a rash.  Stopped using wipes and now I just use a paper towel with water that I add a little baby lotion too.  And I also make sure her bum is dry before I put on Aquaphor.  That seemed to do the trick for me.  Haven't had a diaper rash in about 3 months.

  • Do lots of naked time.  We recently switched to the Walgreens brand diapers and have not had any red butt since (not sure if  its coincidence).  If problem persists maybe consider allergy testing since you did say she has some major food sensitivities.

This.  It was for a yeast diaper rash.  Worked in about a day!

  • My daughter has food sensitivities too and had persistent diaper rash until I figured out all of her sensitivities with an elimination diet (were still BFing). My DD can't tolerate dairy, soy, gluten, egg, or corn - all in the top 8 list. I would have to say that if it's not yeast, it probably is food sensitivities still. I just looked up nutramigen ingredients and it looks like it contains soy and corn. Perhaps she's sensitive to one or both of those along with the dairy?

  • Thanks ladies for the feedback.  I already had the doc look at it before and she said its not a yeast infection, it might still be food allergies, though the soy and dairy protein in nutramigen is supposed to be broken down so it doesn't bother them.  I just called the dr. and am goign to see what she says.  But I think you guys are right she needs more naked time, possibly no more wipes, and make sure the bum is dry before putting on the triple paste...
