AJC article on child care in GA

Pretty interesting article.  At the end, it lists what the average household in each county pays for child care, and what % of their income that amounts to:

  • Interesting! I wish they would have the details for the city of atlanta at the end. I pay way more then the Fulton County amount for my son to just go 3 days a week.

I pay more than the Fulton County average listed, as well.  I guess that's why it's an average, though... must be some people paying a lot less than we are, but who knows whether it's part time, full time, or what the conditions are.  I was surprised that Fayette and Cherokee averages were higher than Fulton.

Yeah, ours were much higher than the avg. they are listing.  Would be interesting to see the complete set of data.

  • Well, I was interested to see what it said about Coweta County since that is where I live and where my boys go to school, but the AJC felt it not important to include my county.  We are also part of the Greater Metro area.  They also didn't include Carroll County.

  • Hmm, interesting.  We pay less than the yearly average for Cobb County.  But it's a higher percent of our income than the average.

I pay right at the average for Fulton Co. and we're well under that 15% of income. Now, that's only for one child. As #2 goes into daycare, our costs will soar.

  • i was quoted in the article and that's kinda, sorta what i said, lol. i'm actually looking in fayette and, of the five (chain nurseries) i'm interested in, prices range from $600-800 per month for infant/toddler.

i just happened to contact the ajc about something else and mentioned my search and they gave me a call and interviewed me. my husband is probably going to be mad i put him out there like that.

the smell thing is kinda interesting because i went to one and the infant room was a little smelly and warm and i now have a more negative opinion about that. it was the cheapest one too. i said i would go back again though.

also, the most expensive one has an incident with a child being left in a van for a few minutes. i actually like this one, though.

We pay less in Cobb as well and less in our percentage of income.  I think we lucked out.  I love Ava's school!

  • Interesting. We spend exactly what they said for Forsyth ($12k). It's a smaller percentage of our income though. When we had a nanny we spent 3 times more than we spend now on daycare.
