July 2011 Moms

Sad news for me.

My mom just called to tell me my dad took a new job. 2000 miles away. I currently live about 45 minutes from my parents which has been perfect. We have our own lives, but they are very reachable. I feel like my daughter gets to see them a perfect amount of time. Now within 3 weeks they will be gone. I still have 6 siblings living at home so it's not just my parents leaving. My dad is a college coach so sometimes these things happen, but he is getting older, so I kinda had figured he would retire where he is/was. Luckily my mom (who is also my doula) will stay a little longer to finish up stuff with their house and such and will still be able to help with my delivery/post partum.

Re: Sad news for me.

  • Aww, that is sad. Sorry that they are leaving so far away. At least you have your other siblings close by and it is especially nice that you mom will stick around to help with the labor/postpartum stuff. Maybe he will retire shortly and move back?

  • I'm so sorry.  We're really far from family too, and it really bothers me that LO won't know her grandparents the way her cousins will/do.

Are they at least going some place that will be fun to visit?

Ehh- kinda. Well they aren't moving a place that is fun, but it's my dad's hometown so he loves it. And it's close(ish) to fun places. They will still visit and so will we. That makes me happy becasue I know my kids will get to see a lot of the nation that they wouldn't otherwise.

That's a very good way of looking at it!

This is actually a good point. Basically all my family and DH's family lives in Arizona (we have a few relatives in California) and I haven't been anywhere really. It would have been neat to visit family that lives in other states, but I never got that chance.

  • I know how you feel!  My dad just took a job in another state, and my DD is so close with him!  Everytime we go to my moms house she is looking for grandpa, it breaks my heart!  My mom stayed here cause she owns a retail store, so not easy for her to go with.  So my parents now in their almost 60's have to live seperate, it is this economy's fault!  My dad had a hard time getting a job in the state we live in.  Gotta  do what you gotta do sometimes, and it should all work out for all of us, but of course it is tough on families!   Hang in there!

  • Based on experience really. The fam made a similar move when I was 14. To see may parents' parents we often road tripped and always took slightly different routes. Becasue of that I have been to The Grand Canyon, Mount Rushmore, Yellowstone and all sorts of little, neat stops and cool big cities. :) That part would be fuin adventures to relive with my own little family. :)
