Is swaddling at nighttime safe?

Is newborn baby swaddling still safe at night time?  I was just assuming I'd dress LO in a onesie and swaddle them at night (and during naps too), but then I was thinking the SIDS rules say no blankets in the crib.  Can LO kick free and it get risky to have a blanket floating around in there?  Am I being silly worrying too much Embarrassed

I did get a couple of sleep sacks, but I think they are in bigger sizes.  What are you ladies doing/planning to do?

Re: Is swaddling at nighttime safe?

  • I have been putting him in a thin onesie, a sleep sack and swaddling just from the chest down. He hasn't escaped the swaddle yet.

  • Just last night, I read in my Dr. Sears baby book that they caution against swaddling for long periods of time (like a night sleep) because it can cause delays and problems in the baby's hip development because they can't move their legs around.

  • My firstborn literally broke out of his swaddles(no matter how tightly we swaddled him).  So there was a loose recieving blanket in the crib.  He is 13 years old.
  • Yes, I swaddled DD for at least the 1st six months..I started using the swaddler because there is less risk than an oversize blanket....DD slept really well cause of swaddling.  I will do the same for DS if he needs it..

  • We swaddled #1 for every nap and nighttime until he was able to roll over- then we stopped using the swaddle and used sleep sacks.  Swaddling was recommended by our pediatrician and our nurses at the hospital even showed us how to do it with receiving blankets (which honestly worked better than most of the swaddles on the market like the Miracle blanket, etc.).

  • We will probably just do onesies and sleep sacks or gowns and sleep sacks. DS never liked to be swaddled so I'm not sure if I'll do it with DD. I do have a Woombie that is a little different than a swaddler but the same concept. I'll see how DD likes that and may use that.
  • Swaddling is fine.  I would think sleep sacks would be fine too.  We plan to use the Swaddle Me with the velcro so it can't come undone with his kicking about and then once it starts getting cold out, we'll do footed PJs and sleep sack. Try not to worry about this kind of stuff.  I feel like once we had to do these kinds of things with DS it just came naturally and we always seemed to make the right decision.  :)
  • We used SwaddleMe blanket at night w/ DD1 and are using them again w/ DD2. We mainly focus on the arms - both girls' arms would flail around and wake them up. I start it about nipple level and wrap their arms up tight. She can still move her legs and the blanket won't get loose and "float" around in the crib (which worries me a little bit). I don't think that's a silly worry; SIDS really scares me.

  • no blankets in the crib means no LOOSE blankets in the crib.  it's fine to put them to sleep swaddled.

  • We'll be using the A&A muslin blankets when LO is tiny and then move up to the woombie.  Swaddling worked wonders for DD and her sleep, so I'm going to try again with this one.  Some babies don't like it, but most do.  People have been swaddling babies since the dawn of time, so I'm not worried about it impeding their development as long as they get plenty of tummy time too.  If your baby likes swaddling and you're worried about her kicking it off and having it in the crib with her, they make various sizes of woombies.  They're impossible to get off and have come highly recommended to me.
