Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Those on finger foods

DS is still on purees.  He has his two bottom teeth, but he does seem to do a better job at "nom, nom" with his gums in the last few weeks.  He gets baby puffs at every meal after he's done and he loves them!

I guess I've been nervous about starting non-pureed food.

If your LO is on finger foods, what do you give them?

Sometimes DH and I throw together dinner, like a sandwich or pizza, so we can't always  give him what we eat.  Though we do usually eat healthy - chicken, crockpot stews, pork tenderloins, turkey bacon BLTs, etc.

I give DD anything as long as it's healthy (mostly).  I'll cut a lot of it up into bite sizes pieces or strips that are easy for her to grab.  She will get whatever we are eating when dinner rolls around, and she eats the school breakfasts/lunches when she's at DC.

I feel like DS is so behind in eating.  I feel like we've held him back.  I've been too nervous that he wasn't ready for finger food.  Plus it's so easy to just puree something or to give him Gerber or those organic pouch purees.

If he's just starting out you could try cutting up soft foods like banana and avacado and coating them in puff dust (i just crushed up buffs in a plastic baggie) that makes anything he tries to pick up easier especially if it's a slippery food. But if he's eating puffs well you could probably try just about anything. Brady completely rejected purees and still pretty much does reject anything of puree'd texture (applesauce, yogurt, etc. is a struggle) so we started him right away on cut up fruits and veggies. You could also try steamed carrots which are super soft, green beans (I used the french style at first because there weren't little "beans" on the inside so they were super easy). Brady also loved mango, peaches...pretty much any "soft" textured fruit.

    Thanks!

  • At Stephanie's 9-month baby-well visit, our paediatrician said that we could give her what we eat - and to start on everything - slowly introducing cow's milk, dairy, everything (to avoid allergies later on).  So we slowly started doing that - grated veggies, then chopped up small pieces of veggies, small chopped up pasta to now almost whole pasta (ie macaroni).

Take it in 'baby' steps and you'll find out what he will and won't tolerate.  She now has 8 teeth and we're currently in full swing of the molars coming in, so we're introducing more and more.  Check with your doctor first, and then I say, go for it!

    Good luck!

Thanks!  Wow......8 teeth.  DS only has 2, and he may just now be starting on his top 1 or 2.

  • I give Abigail anything we are eating as long as it's not dairy.
  • I'm so glad you posted this because I am going through the same thing.  My daughter just turned 10 months and only has two teeth on the bottom.  I give her pureed foods for her meals and then Gerber puffs and wheels for snacks some times.  I also afraid I'm holding her back because I'm nervous.  I'm glad to find someone else in the same boat.

For those of you who give them the same as what you eat for meals, do you grind it up? or just do small bite size pieces?  Did you do that when they only had a couple of teeth or when they had more?

  • Don't feel far behind!  My DD is almost 11 months and is still getting the hang of finger foods.  She doesn't have any teeth yet (her bottom 2 have just started to come in) so our selection has been small.  Plus she hates "slimy" things.  She'll pick them up and give them a weird look and just toss them down!  She loves breads, pancakes, waffles, tortillas.  I finally got her to eat some green beans this week.  It took like a week of putting them on her tray every day before she finally put one in her mouth.  Just be patient and keep trying!

  • He's had pretty much everything we have for the last month or so. Steak, chicken, spaghetti, mac'n'cheese, eggs, luncheon meat, cheese, etc... We don't give him pizza or anything like that, yet, but other than that, he eats what we do in small chunks. Don't be surprised if what goes in comes out whole. Smile GL!

  • DD is completely on table food now and she gets anything that is semi healthy and that she can actually chew.

I give her what we eat unless it's pizza or something like that.

  • if we waited till our babies had a full mouth of teeth for chewing, they wouldn't get finger food until 2 years or so! =)

I totally understand the fear but just start small and soft and work your way up.  You'd be amazed at what they can do with just gums.  And obviously, stay nearby.  They do choke a little from time to time, but their gag reflex is still amazingly strong, and you should know how to save your baby from choking too.  I've done the sweep a couple of times just to get DD to gag out whatever she had.  She probably didn't even need me though.

I'm definitely just offering whatever I'm eating (my DD is a total mooch) unless it is really unhealthy or spicey or something.  She gets pretty much full meals at this point though (chicken, cheese, fruits, veggies, whatever).  Veggies have been hard because she isn't interested, so I use the organic pouches to make sure she gets some veggies still.

I think its funny everyone says no pizza.  Its just bread, sauce and cheese after all.  Are those things you don't give your baby?  Not that I would make it a regular dinner, but I don't think its so bad! Deep fried anything... Now that's another story... Candy, that would be a no...

  • When you guys make pancakes, do you use regular cows milk?  I was told not to give them cows milk until they are 1 year old.  Does that just mean in a bottle?
