NMR: Dyson Recs please!

I know there was a post a while back about vacuums and I can't find it, so sorry for the repeat.

I'm debating on biting the bullet and getting a Dyson. We have some carpet, some area rugs, tile and hardwood floors. We also have carpeted stairs and a dog.

So my 2 part question: Dyson yes or no? Is it worth it?

Which model Dyson do you have or do you rec??

I'm debating on an ultra light weight model vs. standard. Is the pet model really necessary or do reg ones work well for pet hair?

TIA!!!

Re: NMR: Dyson Recs please!

  • I would skip it.  We have the Blueprint and spent $400 or $500 on it and I don't think it's worth that much.  It does pick up more than our old Bissel, but not that much more, plus the cord is shorter.  There are some nice advantages like the had floor option (turns off the brushes so it doesn't fling any dirt while vacuuming), but I'm not wooed by it.  If I could I'd return it and buy a Neato Robotics vacuum in addition to our Bissel.
  • We have the Dyson Animal and OMG I love it!  We got it as a shower gift for our wedding.  We have a beagle, hardwood floors, area rugs, and some carpeted rooms.  It works awesome on all the surfaces and is sooo easy to use!!  I love that the hose is attached through the handle and its all connected.  I would suggest getting it!!  We've had it for over 3 years and its still going strong.  I do get kinda grossed out when I see the amount of stuff it picks up from the floor!

  • Love the Ball model.  Works great on my carpet and wood.  I have the smaller version....same thing but cheaper.  You will just have to empty the container more often, not a big deal.  I like that it is more compact and easier to store/carry too.
  • We have the original (yellow) one (not with a ball). We have almost all wood floors (some laminate, one or two area rugs) - it picks up a lot. Big stuff and small stuff. It really doesn't clog and it goes strong until the canister has to be emptied. We have two hairy dogs (and one messy husband). I really like it. My parents had one and their only complaint was that it was too powerful on flimsy area rugs - I don't think it would be problem on a regular thickness rug (and I haven't had a problem on mine).
