If you CD'd and/or signed, when for potty training?

I'm just curious...whether pottery training, learning, ec, etc?

We exclusively CD and I'm wondering if he might be getting ready simply because of his communication. We sign with Baby Bix and he is starting to tell us 'change diaper' (or at least confirm it when asked.) If he knows when he is wet and can 'say so,' is it time to start with the potty?

Please share your thoughts, as well as any websites or books you found helpful. I work full time so cannot be at it 100% but if we can get started later this summer or on weekends, I'd LOVE not to have a little boy in diaper for another year or more!

  • Is your ticker correct? If so I have no help as we did not start until much later than your ticker. My ds was aware of being wet or needing a change long before he got the whole going to the potty concept. He is just now at 2 yrs 6 months really being great about going to the potty/telling us when he needs to go/ no real accidents. It took him about 2 weeks or so.

  • At about 14 months DS would scream as soon as he went to the bathroom he hated being dirty at about 18 months we made some progress at using the potty but Daycare was not realy and we relapsed.  We are sorta trained now somedays he picks bigboy undies and somedays he picks diapers.  He sometimes goes to the bathroom at friends houses and sometimes he goes in his diaper at home.  Part of the problem is that even when he knows he has to go he can't hold it long and we don't always get the clothing off in time and he still has a very hard time doing it alone.

  • My DS is really pretty much potty trained at home.  I let him be naked a LOT. I used to ask every hour or so if he had to go. If he didn't have to go at the 1 hour point I offered him a choice of potty or diaper. He always chose potty. Now I leave his little potty in the bathroom and he just goes in there and does his thing. If he starts to have an accident he is able to hold it and run (very fast!) to the potty. He can't do pants yet so he has to be bottomless to do it alone. He just started to be able to hold it in within the last 2-3 weeks. I'd give it a shot but not push it or anything.
  • We only CD and though we signed we never used a sign for "diaper" or needing a change. We PT my DS about 3 weeks ago and it was a flying success with the "3 day method." She says any child over 22 months can easily be trained with the method. A younger child may be trained but it could take longer or have a few extra challenges. That said, many people practice EC, but I'm not sure if that's the same as "potty training."

  • We're going to give the 3 day method a try at the end of Aug (before it gets cold) and see how it goes. DD makes the sounds for pee'ing at the potty chair, and I think she sort of gets it. Getting pants down would also be an issue but I'm SAH. We won't put too much pressure on it...just try again later if it's a no-go.

Pants down didn't stop us, but I'm not sure when he'll finally get it himself. I do all the pants down/up here...lol. I think he can get his pants off (though he doesn't ever do it unless it involves removing pajamas in the crib; and those are generally the ones that zip down one leg). He definitely can't pull his pants up.

  • I think the first step at that age would be seeing if he's comfortable with the toilet. We got a seat that goes over the regular toilet seat (I highly recommend one with a little bump/shield thing in the front for boys). I started when DS was around 8 months with holding him over the toilet each time I changed his diaper to see if he had to go more. I don't really think there is a "too early" to introduce the toilet, but kids vary on when they have the ability to actually go diaper-less. Once he's comfortable with whatever toilet/little potty situation you choose, I'd follow his lead on his readiness to move on from there.

DS definitely understands how to make himself go (and has for a while), and will tell us if he has to poop - so long as he's not doing something so fun/interesting that he doesn't want to stop to go use the potty. I'm almost certain we'd be further on the potty transition if it weren't for day care (he moves to the room with the toilets next month, which will probably help). I don't think he has a ton of control over holding pee yet; he goes often, and has woken up dry from naps or been dry for an hour or two on occasion.

Honestly, I'm not in a huge hurry, as it is often much more convenient when out and about for him to use his diaper rather than have to find a potty every half hour (though it's definitely much easier for the poop situation; I'd start with that!).

  • We're ECing with poop, because DD's signs are really clear (she grunts and turns bright red and makes pushing noises, not signs in ASL for diaper). We hold her over the toilet, she poops and grins, and then straightens her legs when she's done. The only down side is that she's started pooping every time we put her in her car seat, but I'm only about 75% convinced that it's related.
