So Emily is officially off the CPAP (Woohoo!!) and on the nasal cannula, one liter, 50% O2. It is phenomenal the progress my little 23 weeker has made. I am so proud of her! But now she won't take her bottle! I guess she thinks she is a big girl now and can eat when she wants LOL Yesterday she just played with it, rolling it around in her mouth from side to side. We thought maybe it was bc of her feeding tube but I really don't think so. She wasn't acting frustrated or throwing a fit, just looking around from side to side scoping out the place. She is starting to act like a newborn and is so much more aware. Which, don't get me wrong, is super duper cool after months of sleeping and being ill. But she can't come home until she can eat on her own! LOL If it isn't one thing it's another right?!? But hey uber-bright side of the post, she is breathing on her own and only needs O2 support. One giant leap closer to bringing her home. CANNOT wait! Her nursery has been ready for weeks LOL
Did anyone else's LO decide to just randomly start declining the bottle at 36w+? I can't help but wonder if she is just getting older and more aware and just doesn't feel like it...
And now I am done rambling... Off to the hospital ![]()
Re: Ohh Emily *sigh*
Grayson JUST (like, as of about a week ago) got to where he was eating well consistantly enough to pull his NG tube out. And really, he's such a lazy eater that he would probably go to kindergarten with a tube, I finally had a nurse pull it and say "we're not GIVING him the option anymore!" lol.
Eating is one of those things that you just have to frustratingly wait for to "click".
Is her feeding tube wtill through her mouth? Moving the babies' tubes to their noses made a big difference in their sucking abilities, I gues something about the tube in the mouth bothered them.
Congrats on moving on to the cannula! That's great news.
Bottle feeding can be SO hard and frustrating-especially when it becomes the last milestone. She will get it soon, maybe she is just adjusting to the new breathing support? I'd have them move her ng tube to her nose so she doesn't have anything in the way of her mouth just in case that's part of it. Also, if things don't improve ask for an OT consult to make sure she isn't having issues with her suck reflex.
She will get there sooner than you think! Whenever I got impatient in the NICU, my mom reminded me that while the days seem SO long, she developed by leaps and bounds from week to week. This week's challenges could be gone by next week!
Our precious girl, born at 27 weeks.
