My DH is totally grossed out by the idea of putting poop in the washing machine and so is protesting my decision to convert to cloth. I don't know how to get him to see past this.
Does he think that there will be chunks of poop left over after it's done washing (I can assure you - there will not be. We've never had anything left over, and while I spray diapers, I'm not all that thorough with getting everything off).
I think its the idea that of putting his clothes to be cleaned in a machine that has been used to wash poop. He basically thinks it is akin to dipping his clothes in the toilet!
Also, there is already poop there. I mean, you wash your clothes, right? And you probably wear undergarments and pants/shorts etc...on the bottom half of your body. And like the rest of the population you shed skin cells from all over your body, including your bottom. Therefore, there is already poop in your washer.
A washing machine is for getting things clean. It's not like you worry that a shirt you wash with a spaghetti sauce stain is going to contaminate other loads of laundry. So why would you worry that poop would? Let the washing machine do its job.
Haha.. he should have been around here when my DD had the stomach flu. We're talking explosive diarrhea and projectile vomit for 9 days, and we're talking smelly diapers & vomit all over sheets, my shirt, her pjs etc. If they are in cloth or disposables their diapers will leak at times. When you have a baby nasty stuff goes in the washer if you use cloth or not. If you're cloth diapering it's possible you have a diaper sprayer handy, know to do the cold pre-rinse to get icky stuff off before the wash so stains don't set in, know that line drying in the sun helps to disinfect etc. You can also tell him breastmilk poop is 100% water soluable, so we didn't even scrap/spray those diapers. HTH!
So what are you supposed to do when the baby has a blowout? (which happend a lot more when DS was in sposies) Throw the clothes away? I say poo is going to be in the washer one way or another anyway. Good Luck!
Ditto the PPs with blowouts in disposables! Babies are going to get poop (and vomit and urine and lord knows what else) on EVERYTHING and it will all need to be washed. He'll get over it!
And believe me, you'll honestly be putting a lot less poop in the washer with CDs than you would if your LO has constant blowouts in disposables.
There will be just as much poop if you use disposables. And then it will be clothes, bedding, and all sorts of fun with poopsplosions.
My boyfriend had issues until I brought up his farming childhood. Where the helll did he think the cow sh!t went? Into the washing machine... and that is way more gross than baby poop. Why is this always a mans issue?

I know it is totally ridiculous. He is in love with his new washing machine and while there will be baby poop on many things, he wants to minimize the amount of poo that goes in the machine. Since I am changing 99.9% of the diapers anyway, I am moving forward with my plan to convert to cloth diapering!

I suppose if he's really against it, you could just be sure to rinse all poop in the toilet first. Once they start solids you'll have to anyways. DH was freaked out about the poo in the washer at first too, but he got over it.

Tell him that you'll make sure to only put cloth diapers on when he won't poo. Have you showed him a cost analysis. I know Jillian's drawers have one on their site. It costs close to $3,000 to disposable diaper a baby until 3 years. It costs around $500(depending what you get) to cloth. You could buy a new washer with that kind of money!
Ladybug has been in disposables for the past 2 weeks due to yeast and every time she has pooped, she has had a blow-out. That means poop on clothing, carseat, me, DH, exc. Trust me, even with disposable diapers, poop will go in the washing machine.

Do you know what his specific hang-up is with it?
