Question about peanut butter

If LO were allergic to peanuts, how much pb would be needed to see a reaction?

We have no known peanut allergies in our fam.  I gave DD some smoothie the other day that had some peanut butter in it...  she didn't have any reaction.

I'm wondering if we are in the clear or if it was due to the fact that she didn't drink that much.

Re: Question about peanut butter

  • Depends on the kiddo. If my DS is even around someone eating peanut butter or if there is peanut dust in the air, he will have an anaphylactic reaction. He's never had anything with peanut butter, but has had reactions.

However, it is a very good sign that you gave her something with PB and that she didn't have a reaction. If that happens even one or two more times without reaction (even in small quantities - as quantity won't really matter if there is an allergy) I would assume she's not allergic to PB. I hope she stays reaction-free!

  • Unfortunately, its impossible to know.  Some people have very serious reactions from simply touching or inhaling the allergen.  And, even within an individual, each reaction can be different than the last.  Also, reactions do not always occur on the first exposure.  My DS's first exposure to peanut butter was eating an entire peanut butter cup on Halloween when he was 2.  He had no reaction whatsoever.  A year and a half later he had one bite of peanut butter ice cream and immediately felt sick and vomitted.

  • my son will smell it on someones breath and go into a shock.  It really depends on your child and the severity of the allergy.

Also, note that most reactions happen on the second exposure. My son has had a piece of egg once and then when i gave it to him the second time (to play with it) he had an ana reaction.

It's super scary introducing Peanuts b/c it really has a bad rep w/ allergies.  But it doesn't take much to set of a reaction.. even peanut dust will set off a reaction.

Just be cautious when giving it to her the second time and look for swelling. I'm sure it will be fine.

I just noticed her age -i would wait at least until she's 1 to give it to her again though.
