XP: Scariest moment as a mom

I posted on FB but last night Hannah had to be rushed to the hospital via ambulance. Around 10:30pm I heard one of the babies making a noise. For whatever reason I went in and checked on her. I looked at her and she was still sleeping, but kinda talking to herself. I started to walk away but went back and felt her and she was burning up. I grabbed her and took her temp and it was 105.1. We immediately gave her tylenol and called the doctor. They said to give her tylenol and take her to the ER.

Within 5 minutes we had her in the car seat and were gathering the keys. I happened to look down at her in the car seat and she was staring at the canopy thing. Then about 10 secs later I look back and she was still staring (no blinking or anything). I touched her face and called her name, nothing. MIL was there cause she was going to watch Lily while we went to the hospital (Abby was actually spending the night at MILs so she was at her house with MILs bf). I freaked out and was yelling, Hannah, Hannah, OMG , etc.. MIL started crying. I grabbed Hannah out of the car seat and ran into the bathroom, sat in the tub with her in my arms and had MIL pour cool water over her. DH was running around like a chicken without a head trying to find the phone and he called 911.It was awful. She was completely limp and unresponsive, but still breathing, although it seemed like she was barely breathing. About 2 mins into the cool bath she started blinking and moving a bit.

A police officer arrived and said we could get out of the tub but I said I wasn't moving her until the EMTs got there cause she needed to cool down. They came and she was responsive at this point. We put her in the car seat after they checked her and put her on the gurney. I then had to run upstairs and change as all my clothes were soaking wet from being in the tub. I went with her in the ambulance and DH drove the car. She luckily was waking up and babbling and whatnot.

They checked her at the hospital and took blood and urine and everything came back okay. They think its just a virus. Apparently hand, foot, and mouth disease is going around. Once her temp dropped to 101 they released us. So now we are alternating tylenol and motrin every 3 hours for 24 hours. Lily ended up having a temp last night of 101.8 (we took it to be safe) and we are giving her the meds too so her temp doesn't spike either.

Holding my sweet Hannah and having her completely limp and unresponsive was the scariest thing I have ever dealt with!!

  • OMG! That's so scary! I hope little Hannah is feeling better today, and that you're doing okay as well b/c I can't imagine going through that.

My BFF's DH was with his daughter when she had a febrile seizure b/c of high fever and he didn't know what was going on and thought his DD was going to die. It impacted him a lot, and he still has some issues after seeing that. So, take it easy on yourself and give yourself time to destress and give your DDs tons of hugs and kisses.

  • I couldn't imagine! I started tearing up just reading this story.

I have heard that hand foot mouth disease is going around. A couple of my cousin's kids have gotten it.

  • That totally made me tear up too! How scary. And way to think fast on your feet by putting her in the tub. I don't know if I would've immediately thought of that. HUGS!

  • That is awful, I also got a little misty reading that, I cannot imagine how terrified you must have been.  One of my boys has been battling a fever that just will not go away (he's on antibiotics now) and it is so awful to hold them and feel how hot their little bodies feel!  His fevers have been high but nowhere near 105, I cannot even imagine.  I hope Hannah feels better soon!

  • I am so sorry you had to go through that. I will keep your DD in my T&Ps.

My DD1 had an "episode" when she was almost 5 months old and was unresponsive. She started crying and when I picked her up, she went limp and her eyes rolled back. I couldn't get her to respond to my voice and I was putting her on the floor to check for a pulse so I could do CPR, when she came to. She had another episode like that about two minutes later, so we took her to the ER.

They kept us in the PICU for 3 days running all kinds of tests on her, and they said it was maybe a seizure, but couldn't be sure since everything came back normal. Seizures don't necessarily have to be the jerky, clonic/tonic behaviors you typically think of, so maybe she was having a febrile seizure?

My DD hasn't had anymore "episodes" and the doctors said a lot of times it is a one time deal and that they will often grow out of it. I hope you don't have to go through that again. No mom should ever have to go through that. **hugs**

  • So, so scary! It is amazing you were able to think so quickly about putting her in the tub.  Hope your little one is ok soon!

(Just as a side note I had febrile seizures as a LO and I can not imagine what I put my parents through.  Thankfully I grew out of them and there were no longlasting effects - well I don't think so at least Wink)

  • That is incredibly terrifying. When my 2nd son was 1 he had a febrile seizure. Scariest thing ever. I was freaking out. I called 911 and they wouldn't let me ride in the ambulance because I had my older son with me. Long story short, he was fine.

I am so glad she is okay and I hope that that never happens again! T&P for you and the girls.

  • Very scary!!  We had a very similar experience and they did call it a febrile seizure.   But that was over a year ago and he has not had one since even though he has had numerous fevers since then.

It is something that we will remember forever and I am sure you will too.  But you should be proud of yourselves that you acted smart and fast.

  • This EXACT same thing happened to Max on his second birthday.  It was soooo scary.  I mean really, the exact same thing.  Went into his room, he was lying there just breathing kind of weirdly but seemed to be sleeping, felt him and his skin was like fire!  Grabbed him, took his temp, 105.9.  Called 911 and jumped in the tub.  911 operator told me not to cool him too quickly so he wouldn't seize but I tell you, when your baby is that hot they are barely conscious and cannot open their eyes and breathing is so shallow you can barely hear it.  I was putting wet washcloths under his armpits and on the back of his neck and he finally started to cry when the ambulance arrived.  We took a ride to the hospital and stayed for a couple of hours all to find out he had a virus.

I know my reply is rather rambling but your post took me right back to that moment and I can completely feel the fear all over again.  It is so traumatic to see your baby in that condition.  Sorry you had to go through that.  If it is any consolation, Max continues to run extremely high fevers when he gets ill and my level of panic has gotten better over the years.  You never get used to it but you do to deal with it on your own.

(((hugs))) and so relieved your LO is ok.
