two things from my infant safety/CPR class last night

Just thought some people might find the following interesting.

1.  Our hospital apparently maintains a safety store that sells carseats, childproofing stuff, etc. for reduced prices.  I was surprised to learn that they also sell Halo SleepSacks (including the ones with swaddles) at cost, about $10-14 -- way better than I've seen at local retailers.  They also said that you can contact them if you want something they don't carry and they'll try to procure it at cost for you.  So, anyway, it might be worthwhile to check to see if your hospital doesn't do something similar.

2.  I asked the nurse about breathable bumpers, and she said that our local SIDS organization says not to use them.  I wasn't planning to use any kind of bumper, but MIL is using the breathables (she's trying to split the difference between SIL who is pro-bumper and me).  So, anyway, I can blame the nurse when I ask MIL to take them out of the crib before I put LO in.

  • Hmm, why did they say that about the bumper?
  • My guess is that while the breathable bumper wouldn't suffocate an infant if her face was pressed against it (like a regular bumper might), it still restricts the general airflow in the crib.

    Yep.

She also had what I thought was helpful language for the inevitable grandma comment:  But what about when LO gets stuck in the slats or bangs her precious head?  The nurse said that those kinds of injuries are treatable; SIDS is not.

Good one.  I'll tuck that in my back pocket for when it comes up in the future.
