Just dd and I are going on a trip to visit my sister in CT next week. It's still up in the air, but dd and I might end up with one free day and if so I'd like to take the train into NYC for just the day.
If it was just you and a 3 y/o for one day in the city what places would you try to see?
Re: What to do in NYC for one day?
I'd do things that she wouldn't normally see, like Grand Central Terminal and the NY landmarks. I wouldn't do a zoo because every major city has a zoo, so I'd try and hit big things like the Empire State Building, maybe get an ice cream treat a Serendipity. If she likes dolls do the American Girl store/cafe. For just one day, I'd pick 3 places to visit. That will be more than enough w/ a 3 year old, getting to/from, etc.
And I'd drag her anywhere I wanted to go, lol. Walk up 5th avenue, go downtown, go to the Natural History Museum... The world is a playground for kids if we make it, kwim? Take a ferry ride to Staten Island for a few bucks to see the city instead of a lot of $$ for a tour boat. And seriously, DD loved the subway. It was a ride to her! We could have ridden that most of the day and she would have been thrilled.
Christmas 2011
the ferry is free. (much to the chagrin of us residents who want the tourists to pay! ) i second the ferry as an interesting destination, but the trip downtown and back and forth on the boat will take about 2 hours minimum, so if you only have one day, it might be out of the way.

Ha! I was actually going to page you specifically because I knew that you'd have some suggestions for fun things to do that are reasonably priced.
I'm not sure yet what our plans are going to be. We're going to visit my sister who is due have a baby any day now (41 weeks right now!) Won't really have a better idea of what day we'll have free until the baby decides to be be born. ;-)
I just adore Central Park. Just walking up the mall, to the boathouse for lunch/snack, then over to Belvedere castle and through the Shakespeare garden...bliss and kid-friendly.
I am a HUGE fan of the Central Park Zoo, especially for a 3 year old. It's cheap and fun, and very compact-so no major hikes between exhibits. The Carousel is also nearby.
If you need an inside activity, I'd go with the Museum of Natural History. I like the Children's museum, but it get's nutsy if it's too crowded, and it's more of a "busy time/play time" kind of a place than a legitimate landmark destination.
OR, the Metropolitan Museum of Art can also be great for a kid, if you're choosy about the exhibits you see. The Egyptian Art/Temple of Dendur is cool and kid-friendly, and the Astor Court (chinese garden) is a beautiful space that everyone can enjoy. And there's the Arms and Armor exhibit- suits of armor, fun to see. And there's always something interesting on the roof--including a fantastic view of the city. (oh, and there's currently an Alexander McQueen exhibit in the Costume Institute in the museum--maybe fun for Mom!) Also admission is by "suggested donation", so if you want to pay less, you can. Also--their cafeteria has reasonably good food, even wine and beer if Mom and Dad are at their "kid in the city" wits end.
In the middle of the Summer, I generally avoid the touristy spots (Times Square, landmark bldngs, etc.) as it's just too darn hot and crowded to get around. But if it's your only chance to see these things, go for a Grey Line double decker bus tour. Pricey, but fun and you hit just about everything.
dylan's candy bar is awesome--PAC loves it there, he's obsessed with the candy in the floors.
you can spend an entire day in central park. The zoo is always a hit, the carousel and they have an awesome kid's park with sand and water play.
the children's museum is cool but not much different than most other ones, so I don't know if it would be my first choice for things to do.
of course, the american girl store. the scholastic store in soho is cool.
this site will give you a calendar of kid stuff going on each week (most of it is free)
also, you must bring Dumpster Jeebus with you and take many photos around NYC landmarks, mmmkay?
