Travel/Umbrella Stroller ?

A friend told DH that we should get an umbrella stroller for traveling. We have a CityMini and I Looooove it. LOVE IT. I got it because it was compact, light, easy to use, etc. I never thought about needing to get something lighter/smaller for traveling. I have a gate check bag for it, so that nothing will happen to if with the airline people throwing it around. DH thinks it's too bulky for traveling. I went to check out cheapo umbrellas and most either have no canopy or a janky one and this is a must for me as we'll be doing outdoor walking on our trip. They also seemed too short (and I'm not tall), and not as comfortable/ergonomic as the CM. I (of course) was attracted to the Maclaren, but it's way too much $$ for me to spend. I might be able to find someone to borrow one from, but do I bother? Am I thinking about this too much? WWYD?

  • i would just use the citi mini.  i don't think an umbrella stroller will be that much more compact.  we have a first years jet that is great (it was about $25 on amazon) but that canopy isn't that big.  you can buy extensions for them though.

  • email me- you're welcome to borrow our maclaren.  you can always bring yours over and we can look at them side by side but my guess is yours would be fine.

sweet! thanks! i'm going to talk to DH about this tonight and I'll email you if we decide to go the umbrella route. I think I'm going to push for sticking with the CM though.

  • I love love our MacLaren triumph. We bought ours for traveling and I love how compact and lightweight it is. If you don't need one right away, keep an eye out on Gilt or for a good sale on diapers.com. We got ours on closeout.

  • I think the mini will be fine!  When will it be too bulky?  You'll be using it through the airport right?  It's not like he'll have to carry it?

That's exactly what I said. The extent that he'll have to carry it is through security and to the gate when we're getting ready to board. Whatevs. I just wish he'd be so enthusiastic about other purchases...

  • We have a City Mini and Maclaren Volo.  We love them both!  I will say that I do love being able to carry the Maclaren on your shoulder with the strap.  It is super light and compact, so we travel with it most of the time.
