Cloth Diapering

When to venture back into cloth?

DD has had some issues with yeast through April, May and June. The first two times I didn't wait long enough to put her back in cloth and the rash returned (cloth had been bleached, stripped, sunned).

This time she's been out of cloth since her 4-month appointment almost a month ago. It looks like the rash is gone, even on her legs (where it lingered before and I ignored it).

When would you feel safe getting her back in her cloth? If I have to buy another pack of sposies I'm going to lose my mind! Stick out tongue Plus I have some new Sbish fitteds on the way eventually and really want to use them.

  • I could never have waited that long!!  Get her back in cloth!  One thing that may help also is giving your LO a probiotic.   That may help the yeast not return.  GL, yeast is the worst!

  • I've heard giving a probiotic can help. Any special ones for babies? I keep acidophilus in the house for the chinchillas (lol) but have never taken any myself.

  • Not for your four month old, but yogurt contains a lot of good bacteria if you aren't on a probiotic. It's also good to eat when you're on an antibiotic. It can help prevent the diarrhea that sometimes accompanies antibiotic use.

  • My pedi said we could open an adult capsule of the probiotic made for irritable bowel syndrome.  Dump this in baby cereal (if you LO eats this yet) or put in a bottle.  We have also just made a paste and put it on her tongue.  Use about 1/3 of the capsule.  I would check with your pedi first for what he recommends also.

  • For myself, I eat Greek style yogurt every day (which is why I don't take a probiotic).

For her, she doesn't get cereal yet but will soon (pedi said to start between 5 and 6 months) and she gets a bottle occasionally. I'll give her a call and see what she recommends.

Udo's Choice Infant probiotic.  Its a powder, you use a 1/2 teaspoons a day but can use up to 3 1/2 teaspoons if you are treating something.  It is refrigerated so I wouldn't order it online but I bet you could find it at Whole Foods.  I get mine at our food co-op.  I started using it when my little guy kept getting yeasty rashes. So far so good, and his poop has been more regular so I think it is making a difference.

I also keep him in the cloth but use a liner while we treat the rash.
