Preemies

Bottles

Hey everyone! Since there have been so many recent NICU grads, I had a question for y'all...

Emily is starting to do sprints off the CPAP and is responding really well! DH and I are starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel and getting ready for a take home baby (after 12 weeks in the NICU). We have the nursery just about complete and other odds and ends done (lucky for us she hit 4lbs15.8oz tonight so we got to keep our first choice travel system). But I know there is more we need.

So the question is what kinds of bottles have y'all found work well for your LOs? We don't seem to have a reflux problem as yet but I'm not ruling it out. What bottles have you found help w/ reflux, gas, and mimic the nipple well? The goal is to EBF but I know there will be a bit of a transition. So any help and insight is appreciated! TIA

Re: Bottles

  • DS still uses his bottles from NICU. I had originally bought Tomee Tipees for him (and he's tried them) but between two NICU trips & other events he's wound up with nipple confusion/uncoordinated suck. I EP with the intention of EBF but all the extra stuff has kept us from that. I highly recommend just sticking with what's been working, getting the hang of BF'ing and being home/new environment/new everything - then go from there. If all of a sudden you find yourself reeeally wanting a new bottle (and I think it's more us, the parents, not the LO who want the switch) then that's what Amazon is there for :)

  • Oh, and congratulations on the glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel :) Haven't they been working on BF'ing with you during your stay? Are you using shields? Those also played into our situation - and the LC did warn me at birth that NICU babes can get mixed up and confused. We needed the shield, so that's what we used, though we don't anymore.

  • Congrats on getting close to discharge!

We use Dr. Browns. DS has pretty bad reflux and gas and they work great for him. The OT in the NICU suggested these and we tried them out before being discharged.

  • We use Dr. Brown's bottles & bought preemie nipples to go with them. We tried the level 1 nipples when he came home but he didn't do well with them but did great with the preemie nipples.  There are a lot of parts to the bottles but I have to say they have been great for DS.  We bought them specifically because they are supposed to help with reflux, colic & etc.  He did have a minor adjustment to the different nipple from the ones they were using in the NICU. We ended up switching over from the snappies because the amount he was taking was increasing.  We did use the nipples from the NICU initially with the Dr. Brown's bottles & they worked fine too.

We have only done recreational breastfeeding for a few weeks. Since she has had so many breathing issues I backed off a couple weeks ago. I figure prioritizing will get my baby home sooner LOL Since she is handling her weaning pretty well, I'm thinking of starting to try BF next week (37wks GA). That way we are only throwing one new thing at her at a time. IDK the dr thought it made sense...

  • Thanks for the suggestions!  I was thinking of doing the Avent or Dr Brown's so I guess we will let our princess decide LOL

  • We use Dr. Brown's. My little lady had a bad time with spittin up oin the hospital and they recommended then and we have been using them ever since.

  • We just use the NICU bottles/nipples (they sent us home with a huge bag of them). I figure she was used to them, and any sort of transition I want to do is from bottle to breast, not from bottle 1 to bottle 2.

Plus, I'm a cheap bastard and don't want to buy a whole bunch of bottles while I still have the pipedream of EBFing...
