DD fell off our huge bed!

Yup I'm that mom...

I feel like complete shiit :( DD wakes up 2-3 times a night still so when she gets up I bring her into my bed, feed her, and put her back into her crib (unless we both fall asleep). I have a king size bed and since it's just me and DD (DH is deployed) I just built a pillow barrier and I felt like that was pretty secure...and that fact that 2 sides of the bed are against walls. She normally doesn't move around much in her sleep.

So last night at 2:45am I wake to a ::thunk:: and crying...I seriously could have died. I jumped up and was hoping it was a firework that woke her up...but nope. She was on the ground crying! My stomach dropped and I had to fight the urge to throw up. I must have fallen asleep and forgot to put the pillows around us...ahhh I feel so bad! She cried for a couple minutes but she was still asleep. She finally woke up and we played for an hour so I could make sure she was ok, checked her pupils etc. She was as happy as a clam and acted like nothing happened. She is completely normal today, in a great mood, and not s scratch on her. I can't believe I let it happen but I am so grateful she is ok, it makes me even more upset because I am always so careful. Ugh...

  • It happens.. Glad your DD is ok! Don't be too hard yourself.

I would suggest an actual bed rail instead of pillows though and having her sleep on the side that is against the wall.

  • The human race wouldn't have survived if babies were fragile!  These things happen to all of us.  The boy I used to nanny for still has a scar on his face from when I let him jump on the bed (he fell off and caught the corner of the nightstand on his way down).  I still feel bad every time I see that scar.  I know it's hard, but don't beat yourself up over it.  Thank you for posting this, it's a good reminder for all of us!
  • Aww it's ok. It does happen to all of us. My mom and I were in VA a couple weeks ago. We were standing in my cousins kitchen (they have a MIL suite attached to their house) and Gracie was nowhere to be seen. We all looked at each other and took off running. The kitchen in my aunt's side of the house is built up with stairs going down to the rest of the suite. Gracie was sitting at the bottom of the stairs crying. She had fallen down extremely hard wood stairs. It scared me to death, but she was fine. Now, at home she will stand at the bottom of our stairs, but never tries to go up them anymore.

  • Eh.  It happens.  DS started crawling one night right before bed, so I never thought he'd be a master at it right away.  The next morning when my DH left for work, he put DS in bed with me and within 15 minutes I had fallen back asleep and he crawled right off our extra thick posturpedic bed that is so tall that i can't even just sit on it, but need to throw a leg up on it at a time to get on it.  He cried, I made sure he was flailing and moving, then I scooped him up and he was fine.  Lesson learned at our house.

  • Thanks for the responses :) It wasn't a P&R I promise I just can't figure out how to reply from my phone. I feel a little better as the day has gone on but when I think about it I cringe...
  • The feeling really sucks, but it happens to everyone. There's even an old wives' tale that says that it's bad luck if your baby doesn't fall off the bed/couch/whatever by the time they're 1, lol. I miss the girls sleeping in the bed with me, but they are SO crawly and wiggly that they would be in the floor before I could even wake up.
