July 2011 Moms

big boy, med free, and an in law vent (yes another one)

ok so we knew this baby was bound to be "larger". My husband was almost 10 pounds, i was almost 9, my brother was almost 10... we all have big heads and I had no doubt this child would follow. at yesterdays 36 week growth turns out he's in the 90th %. no problem, saw it coming. he's 7.5 pounds now, which means he's got the potential to be a 10 pounder. Additionally, those things are always off by a little bit or a lot. so i'm taking it with a grain of salt and just finding joy that he is healthy and big.

(on a side note my doc is amazing and said "it would be stupid to induce b/c he's a big baby. big babies never come down far enough after induction and it would almost promise you a C section as a result. you can do it". omg i love him) anyway...

out of excitement to know that LO is following after his daddy's footsetps and is a nice size, we tell everyone in the family. My mom, dad and brother know me well enough to only be supportive and not say anything stupid about going natural with such a big baby. but pretty much everyone else got a kick out of it, and have been cracking jokes without stop about how now i'll be changing my mind and there's no way i can do this naturally.

FIL, MIL, and some friends all get a real kick out of themselves. "yeah.... maybe you want to rethink the no med thing, har har har" or as FIL said "well now she can let that silly natural idea go and just do it the normal way." why? b/c it might hurt a little more? all the more reason for me to want to do it now.

i fully expect to birth this "large" child naturally. at this point I hope he's 10 pounds and i can stick it to everyone.

ok, i'm done now. just thought i'd share more stupid comments from family and friends. why is it so hard for people to be effing supportive? the sono tech who told us his weight estimate said "oh honey, he's tiny. my baby was 11 pounds and i did it with no meds in 30 hours. i promise you can do it" god love her!

  • I absolutely love your attitude. I faced a surprising amount of naysayers (even my dad!!) when I talked about going natural too and it made me all the more determined to give it a go. Oh, and my "could be a 10 lb baby" only ended up weighing just over 7 lbs. Wink

    You can do it!

  • I had my biggest one med free (except for the pitocin, since I was induced/augmented).

Well, The drug free wasn't planned. He came before  the epi could get there.

BUT....the only problem I had with him taking a while to come out was because I was too tense and couldn't focus due to the severe pain (after all...I had NOT planned on med free birth...and I am SORRY....breathing and focusing was NOT working for me)

But I  delivered my 8 lb 6 oz, 23 inch son induced and no epi. My Aunt delivered a 12 lbr with no meds. My grandma's 5 kids were all 9 and 10 lbs....back when epi was definitely NOT routine! It is really rare that a baby is too big to deliver....and natural used to be the only option for YEARS and YEARS and YEARS.

I side eye these girls who were given c-section s by the doc because they "were only 100 lbs when they got pregnant" and too small. Um, yeah...so were millions of women for a couple thousand years

  • Honestly I will not be doing natural, but major props for you for being so empowered! I would tell everyone where they can stick it and if they don't agree with how I want to do this then they can wait at home to hear about the baby. If they can't support me with out making jokes and comments then they will not be allowed in the hospital.

Sorry if that seems harsh I am also having IL issues and it is tempting to say a lot of that to them.

  • You can totally do it... if nothing else, just to say "I told you so!"

DS1 was 10 lbs even and I had him med free.... good luck with this, you CAN do it!

  • So cool that your OB is SO encouraging!!!  You can do it!

One of my friends had been told throughout her pregnancy that he baby was in the 95th percentile for weight and she was fully expecting to delilver a 9-10+ pounder.  Well, she had her son a couple of weeks ago and he was a completely average 7.5 lbs!  Either way, your body is made to do this and you'll do great whether LO is 7lbs, 10lbs or anything in between!!

  • Ditto pp.  Your ILs sound defensive... I'm guessing they didn't go medfree?

I've heard some similar comments from my ILs.  My two favorite retorts, both Mrs. Manners approved, are:

    thank you?

What an odd thing to say!

Forget them.  The birth isn't about them, it's about what's right for you and your LO.

  • I heart you :).  I love your attitude.  I am a believer that babies are the right size for your body.  As proof, my cousin had THREE over 10 pound babies, med free/vaginally.  They have some big old pumpkin heads too.  She is 4'9", 95 pounds soaking wet pre-pregnancy.  She was actually a big baby herself at almost 10 pounds, but her husband is currently 6'6" and a big man, but he too was a big baby.  I always say, if she can do it, everyone can!

I know YOU CAN DO IT!
