DD has bad tonsils. She has had tonsilitis 3 times now and before each time she has done the same things. She stops eating anything but yogurt, won't drink milk, pounds back water like it's nothing and snores a lot just to name a few things. She had a 4 hour nap yesterday and I said, "huh, I think her tonsils are acting up again." Our doctor is on holidays so I was talking to my mom and she said, "you should call our doctor's old partner." So I looked him up and called. He got DD in to see him tonight after hours. I told him what was going on. That she wasn't even acting sick yet but I don't want to end up in the ER in a couple of days with DD with a high fever and a heart rate in the 180s. He looked in her throat for about two seconds and said, "yep tonsils are huge and starting to look infected. Good call. What does your doctor normally give her?" Wrote a prescription and weighed DD again so he could tell me an accurate dose of Tylenol for fever and said, "I learned early on in my career, always listen to mothers. They are usually 100% correct when it comes to what's going on with their kids. Good job, hopefully this will prevent her from reaching the point where you can't control her fever. Though I bet you are getting pretty good at that by now."
By the time we got home DD had a fever. A low one, but it was there. So glad I got her in to the doctor today.
Re: Why as a parent you have to listen to your instincts.
This is how my dr is with my DD! It drives me nuts!! Umm hello... she's my kid and I'm with her 24/7, I think I know what I'm talking about!
So glad you got a dr to listen and you listened to yourself!

Oh I am in a full on battle for getting her tonsils out. They are telling me she is too young and that they are big because she is only two and that she will grow out of it, yet, she has sleep apnea, Since February she has had tonsillitis 4 times and with the exception of this time, each time has resulted in her ending up in the emergency room hooked up to a heart monitor while the hospital staff tried to keep her body temp down. She would get a fever of 105 and a heart rate in the 180s. Get the fever down and the heart rate goes down. Sadly that first initial spike in body temp seems to be resistant to Tylenol and Motrin so they have to do a bunch of other things to get her temp down. Once they get it down to 100 she seems to not spike again.
She has been to see an ENT who was a total asshat. Her throat hurt. She was feverish and sick. The ENT says, to my not even 2y/o "can I look in your throat?" she shakes her head no. He doesn't examine her at all. I tell him that she is two and sick. Ask her if she wants a pony and she will say no. Look in her damn throat. He tells me we have to respect her wishes and then says, "I don't think she is an urgent case but I think she needs to be seen by someone at CHEO (children's hospital) I will refer you there." We are on a waiting list of a full year.
