Asthma in very little ones

Anyone have experience with asthma in young children?  My DS was 3 months premature and has been in and out of the ER all winter with breathing issues.  They can't "officially" diagnose him with asthma, but it's quite possible.  We were in the hospital last weekend for 3 days, home for 4 and back in for another 4 days.  We have puffers, and he has recieved many doses of liquid steroids (which I'd like to avoid whenever possible).

Any advice? Tips?  Alternative remedies?   This is getting ridiculous!  Thanks in advance!

(by the way, my heart goes out to all you mamas who spend extended periods of time in the hospital.  Our multiple stays have been exhausting, but at least we aren't there too long, usually.  Prayers and strength to all of you ladies!)

  • Maybe try a swallow study? Our story was similar and it turned out that DS was probably having microaspirations that caused infections in his lungs. Now we are using thickeners in his fluids and hoping that does the trick.

  • vitamin d helped get rid of my ds's asthma.  you can read his story and read research about the correlation between vit d and asthma at the bottom here:

epsom salt bathes help asthma but I'm not sure of an age you should start.  if your dc is too young then I would supplement with magnesium or magnesium rich foods (if you are breastfeeding).

if you are breastfeeding, other foods that you can eat that might help include fennel, radicchio, sweet potato, butternut squash, nori, raspberry, walnuts, flaxseed, mint and fresh salmon.

my heart goes out to you, we used to have to do constant breathing treatments, rescue inhalers, scary trips to the ER.  it's so difficult when your little one cannot breathe.  good luck!

Thanks for the advice! I'm seeing the pedi tomorrow, and have some questions for him.

carlinlp - thanks for the link to your blog - just skimmed it, and you have been through SO much!  Wow.  Hope things continue to improve, and it's great that you can help others as you learn.

My twins were born at 32w.  They were diagnosed with RAD (reactive airway disease) at 9 mo old after several visits to the dr for a cough.  They started breathing treatments then.

They officially have asthma.  They are now 5 and still using nebulizers (we are transitioning to inhalers).  They use them twice a day.  They are both on singulair and zyrtec as well.  We see a specialist also.  The dr said they might outgrow it around 5 yo, but I doubt it will happen.

  • My DD had asthma diagnosed with a bronchoscope at 14 months old (actual). We did twice daily steroid breathing treatments for MONTHS throughout the winter, and my husband and I kept her pretty isolated to try and help her.

We've stopped the steroids for the summer, but our pulmonologist plans to have us resume them this fall (september). They have helped us out tremendously.

Pulmicort is the name of the medication we were using. Let me know if there is anything else I can do to help!
