Nursing covers at the hospital?

Are any of you planning to breastfeed bringing your nursing cover to the hospital? I haven't planned on bringing mine, but now I'm wondering if I'll want it. I figured that I'd want to be able to see everything easily and not be covered, but who knows?

BTDT moms: Did you bring yours? If you did, did you use it? If you didn't, did you wish you had brought it?

Thanks!

  • Didn't bring it, didn't need it.  BF'ing is hard and the first several times a nurse will probably be standing there helping you figure things out and checking to make sure the latch is correct.  She cant really do that if you're covered up.

Then again, I was never really a nursing cover mom anyway.  I wore appropriate layers for the season so I could just pull down a strap or whatever and BF completely unnoticed.

This is what I figured, but of course I started overthinking it. :)  Thanks!

  • I'm bringing mine. If someone wants to visit mid-feeding I'd like to have something just in case. I guess a blanket or sheet would work but I want to get used to all the supplies I have from the get-go.  Bringing the boppy & my breast friend too.

  • I'm not bringing one. I'm hoping to not have too many visitors and get early discharge, so it won't really be an issue. If baby needs to eat while people are in the room, I will not hesitate to kick them out. Really I just mean my MIL, no one else will try to be in my business so much. I don't even want her to visit until we get home, but there isn't really any way to stop her without stirring up a huge fight resulting in her holding a grudge for years.

  • I've never used a nursing cover, just a blanket, but while in the hospital I needed all the help I could get and needed to actually SEE what I was doing.  Learning to nurse was much more important than having visitors so if DD was hungry we asked all visitors to leave the room while I nursed.  You'll have plenty of time to get the mechanics of using the cover down when you get home, use that time in the hospital to just get down the latch/nursing portion down as well as you can.

  • I'm not bringing mine to the hospital. Like PP I want to make sure everything is going ok, and all the relatives who like to barge in can be kept out by the nurses.

  • I did bring it because it wasn't big to pack or anything, and I am glad, because it was easy to throw on if unexpected company showed up...and lots of them did. Plus some of the gowns at the hospital had these weird double slits on the front for nursing so it left very little to the imagination if you shifted the wrong way.

  • I'm bringing mine but will only use if we have company I don't want to nurse in front of- I won't use it otherwise.

I didn't bring it last time- and wish I had- I wasn't comfortable nursing in front of MIL and just had DH ask her to step outside when I nursed.

  • I didn't bring mine either time, but I'm not a fan of covers.

  • No way. It's hard enough to get things figured out in the beginning and you really need to see what they're doing (latched correctly, swallowing properly). The hospital gowns have convenient openings for the breasts that keep things pretty discreet. I'm totally anti-nursing cover though :P  :)
  • No.  If i'm trying to breastfeed and theres people I would be uncomfortable with seeing my boobs (like MIL) I'd just ask her to leave :).

Probably easier said than done though

  • I didn't bring it, and wouldn't have used it if I did. I pulled my hospital gown down while BFing so I could have the skin to skin contact that is recommended for early bonding. I also wanted to be able to clearly see the latch to make sure DD was doing it right.

  • I brought one last time, and DS was in the NICU so I just used it for pumping. It was really nice not to have my schedule interrupted by visitors. Still, probably better to have no visitors and BF freely! That's the way I preferred it when DS finally was getting on the breast.

  • It takes up pretty much no space in a bag... why not just take it?

  • I kicked out anyone I'd not want to see. Nurses I was having check latch. Was a good reason for parents to GTFO of my room. ;)
