Can I just mail covers in an envelope?

I had someone mail one to me in an envelope but I can't remember if she just put a stamp on it or prepaid the postage. Anyone ever done this that can give me some instruction? Do they way more than the limit for a stamp?

You can weigh it at home (I use a food scale) and go to USPS.com to calculate postage if you don't want to go to the PO.  If someone pays you through paypal you can also print the label right from there.
