October 2011 Moms

Ugh!

So we had an u/s last Friday so that they could remeasure our baby's kidneys.  Well, when we went the tech told us that they were actually measuring her urethra(not sure how to spell it, but it's where your urine passes through).  This made us feel a little bit better, because we were told that it's usually something that is not a big deal and that she should outgrow it with no problems.  Well, I went in for my DR. appointment this morning and found out the the tech was wrong and that they are actually looking at her kidneys.  It turns out that the average size for a baby's kidneys during the 2nd tri is supposed to be around 4 and our baby's kidneys are 4.5 and 4.9(cm?).  So now they are sending me to a specialist to have them look at them and decide if it could be a genetic disorder.

Sorry for the rant, I'm just wanting to know what's going on and getting mixed messages from different people is frustrating.  My dr. doesn't seem too worried, she says that as long as the kidneys stay the size they are now and then just grow with the baby everything will be fine.  Trying not to worry, especially since MH is at a military school right now.

On a good note, during the appointment she kept kicking the heart moniter.  It was pretty cute!

Re: Ugh!

  • try not to panic or worry until necessary.  I find that the u/s techs dont always know what is going on.  Our u/s techs arent even allowed to answer questions because they want the information to be interpreted by the doctor first.

I hope everything is okay with your LO.  a good friend of mine was born and had to have one kidney removed immediately.  She has never had a single problem her entire life and she can hold her pee forever!!!  so kidney problem doesnt mean the worst.  And I am sure your baby will end up fine after 9 months.  Sometimes I think we have too much technology to measure and too many landmark normals to look at.

  • Just writing to say hang in there and I'm someone in a similar situation.  Part of me thinks it's great that they can do all these tests to tell us what could be wrong, but come on - half the time it leaves us worrying needlessly.

My Dr. today said they wanted me to have another u/s in 4 weeks because of cistrina magna being prominent....she doesn't think it's a need to worry because it's within the range it's suppose to be, just prominent, but 4 weeks to wait for another ultra sound to find out?!  Ugh.  I had to leave work because I didn't want to get upset there and have to tell everyone what's going on when everything's likely normal.  My husband ended up calling my Dr. because I was upset and she assured him that they are just being overly cautious.

Prayers are with you that everything's okay with your LO and wanted to let you know to an extent I know what you're going through.

  • I appreciate that.  I'm doing my best not to worry as well.  Basically going with the concept of not worrying until someone gives me something to really worry about.

I hope all goes well with your situation as well and there are no big issues.  T&P with you and your LO as well!
