July 2011 Moms

Missing preregistration?

I just called to set up preregistration and L&D. They look my insurance information, but said that I had to set up an appointment to go over everything (like my birth plan) and sign some forms.

Here's the thing. July is apparently a busy baby month. I can't get an appointment until the 12th. I'm due the 21st. I honestly think that my due date should be a week sooner, primarily because the 21st date is based on my conceiving during a week when I didn't actually have sex, but I've just stuck with the official date.

So I'm a little worried that preregistration won't happen. So what if it doesn't? Do I just stick my birth plan and a pen to sign some forms in my hospital bag and roll with it? Is preregistration even that important?

Re: Missing preregistration?

  • At my hospital it is just more of a convenience thing.  If you don't make your pre registration cut off, you have to sit there are fill everything out while you are in labor.  They can't touch you until all of your forms have been signed.

  • I wish I knew how that worked. I never preregistered. Mostly because I always ended up with at least ONE premature visit to L&D. So I think they did it then. This time I am at different hospital....but the docs work exclusively for THAT hospital....so my info transfers straight from doc office computer system to hospital system.

I can't believe you need an appointment, that seems over the top!  I just had to fill out a form.  It took like 5 minutes.
  • Is the form online on your hospital website?  Or maybe you could just pick one up, fill it in and drop it off sooner?  I don't think filling out paperwork while your dilating would be very fun, try and get it done beforehand if you can.

  • I just had to fill out a form and hand it in.

Can you pick up the form now, fill it out yourself, and either submit it now or hold on to it so that you can just hand it to them if you happen to go before the 12th?

  • Our doctor said it's a convenience thing.  That way you don't spend 20 minutes while you're contracting, filling out forms.

Can your doctor take a copy of your birth plan and have it placed in your chart?  All that info should be available to the hospital.  My doctor said they will scan mine in and place it in my record so the hospital has it.

If it doesn't get done, just go with the flow.  What else can you do?

  • If your OB is at the hospital (and not an unaffiliated clinic) ask him if you can fill the form out at an appt.

That's what my OB/hospital does. At 34 weeks while you're waiting for the doc they give you a stack of paperwork to checkoff and sign and then once with the OB there's some electronic filing to do.

Easy Peasy and takes like 8 minutes.

I can't believe you actually need an appt. for that. I'd think the sec. at L&D would be able to hand you a form anytime.

  • I would think it's more of a convenience thing. My hospital does all of their pre-admission over the phone (insurance info, emergency contact, allergies, etc) and my OB includes a copy of the anesthesiology paperwork my first visit that gets mailed in ahead of time. Just bring a pen and your birthplan and I'm sure it will be fine.
  • It is definately a convienence. Think of all the preemies who are born without any registration info at all- it really isn't a big deal. Especially if your doc has a general idea of what you are expecting out of your labor delivery. It is nice to go in, but not neccessary. Mine (with DD over a year ago) was about an hour long and they got copies of all your insurance info, birth plan, health history, etc. You also have to sign a release for an epidural. (I didn't have one, nor do I plan too this time, but you sign it just in case you need it (c-sect, etc.) so you aren't worrying about paperwork in the middle of a contraction. They go through your birth plan and discuss all your options. It is also nice if there are certain people you want/don't want in the room at any time. But, as I said, in a pinch, all this can be worked out later. Just put all the paperwork you have (including the hospital forms if you were already given them to fill out) in your hospital bag. Receptionist and nurses can go over them while you are being checked in. I am in a similar situation even though I scheduled mine several weeks ago! At least I delieved there Feb 2010, so most of my stuff should still be on file. GL! :)
