The most ridiculous wedding/reception...

Went to a wedding Saturday. We waited at the reception for over an hour and a half before the wedding party showed up...there were no drinks and no appetizers, nothing. There were soda machines that weren't even working, that's it. At least I didn't bring my kids--my nephews were miserable.

The worst part is that apparently the grooms family had a keg in the back--if I had known, I would have joined them.

  • oh that's bad. I have been to a couple of wedding where they took so many damn pictures after the ceremony that dinner wasn't served until 10pm. I was pissed.

  • I went to a wedding like this in March.  It was ridiculous.  Not only did they not show up for almost 2hrs after the wedding, the theme was "winter wonderland" or something snowish.  It was after the first day of spring. She had the air on to make it "chilly" inside on purpose to add to the effect.  Everyone was freezing!!  Over half of the people left before she got there.  There was also no drinks/appetizers/etc.  I mean, the buffet was there and you could see the drinks but they were not allowing anyone to eat.  The wedding started at 6.  At 8 they still werent at the reception.  They came in and did their first dance, father/daughter dance, mother/son dance and then the couple and bridal party went through the line.  Luckily since half the people left it wasnt a long wait.  She still ran out of food though.  She only had finger foods and people were starving.  Finger food buffet style after 8pm.  Then she waited another hour after the last person went through to do the toast.  Finally at 11 something they cut the cake.  I would say out of 120+/- people that were at the wedding there were probably 25 people left at that point.  Her cake was HUGE.  Enough to feed over 150people.  It was the longest most miserable reception ever.  I wanted to leave at 9 but I rode with my mom.  Ugh.  Luckily they did have wine/beer/champagne.  I usually dont drink but had 2 glasses of wine.  Plus the cake turned out to be delish & I ate 2 pieces.  Looked like she has a little extra.  lol.

  • I was at one this weekend where there was a 2 hour wait between the ceremony and reception, no place to go and the guests lingered outside in the cold and bugs on a gravel driveway (200 guests) with no refreshments or entertainment of any kind (not even a radio playing).  It was held at a camp 25 minutes away from the nearest town.  The mosquitos were BAD.

Then, it started to rain as we were asked to line up for the receiving line which included EVERYBODY in the wedding party: 20 people.  We skipped that and later got busted by the groom for not going through it.  We let him know that we were at the end of the line and it was raining hard at the time.

Oh yeah, and the wedding was dry.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am

I have seen very different weddings as we're an immediate family of about 25 people.

(However, I have to agree that some are pretty strange.  I don't think there's anything wrong with having small economical wedding receptions, but when they're even less than that why bother?  If they're really breaking the bank why not just invite immediate family?  I think people are pressured to invite everyone they know under the sun, and then can't acommodate all of them.)

That being said my niece is getting married in 2 weeks, and is having a church wedding, and a lunch buffet type deal at the church is completely dry). What's odd is that both my niece and the groom drink.  So maybe they just wanted the reception there because they liked te fact that it was at the church?

They are having the after party (liquor) at her parents house just for the immediate family.

  • We have two weddings this weekend and I really hope this doesn't happen to us.

The first wedding is Friday night at 5pm and the second wedding is on Saturday at noon. Both weddings are for DH's cousins. The second wedding is a dry wedding. I'm afraid I might have to bring a flask for the second wedding since I'm expected to deal with DH's family for 2 days in a row...

  • SIL's wedding was like that...2 hrs of waiting while they took pics. However, there was a bar but no food...so I was drunk before they got there, as was half the guest list

  • This happened at a cousin's wedding.  No apps, no drinks, nothing for people to do while they took pictures.  We were there for 2 hours before they showed up.  One of my cousins had to leave to do something else, and sent us a cell phone pic of himself biting into a sandwich.  It was awful.

  • We did all our pictures before the wedding, but as soon as the ceremony was over we took a party bus and drove around for a little more than an hour.  We did have food and drinks for people though, because like everyone else says it sucks to have that time with NOTHING to do.  One wedding I went to there was a big gap and we went to garage sales. ha

I posted this earlier on thenest, but my advice is a big purse and a fifth of vodka. Also thought about the CrystalLight2Go packets if they have sodas only. Sprite+Strawberry Lemonade+Vodka=Good time. :)

  • I wish I had brought a flask...I sat at a baby shower for a couple of hours prior to the wedding listening to a bunch of conservative nonsense. Then I sat at the wedding and started to listen to it, got annoyed and started with my fun nonsense...which either horrifies people or cracks them up. Vodka would have made it far more fun. I love saying inappropriate things to people who aren't used to hearing them.

A big thank you to Jenn (motherbucker) for entertaining me during the shower! I was also texting my husband and my SIL (across the room from me) the whole time :)
