Went to a wedding Saturday. We waited at the reception for over an hour and a half before the wedding party showed up...there were no drinks and no appetizers, nothing. There were soda machines that weren't even working, that's it. At least I didn't bring my kids--my nephews were miserable.
The worst part is that apparently the grooms family had a keg in the back--if I had known, I would have joined them.

I was at one this weekend where there was a 2 hour wait between the ceremony and reception, no place to go and the guests lingered outside in the cold and bugs on a gravel driveway (200 guests) with no refreshments or entertainment of any kind (not even a radio playing). It was held at a camp 25 minutes away from the nearest town. The mosquitos were BAD.
Then, it started to rain as we were asked to line up for the receiving line which included EVERYBODY in the wedding party: 20 people. We skipped that and later got busted by the groom for not going through it. We let him know that we were at the end of the line and it was raining hard at the time.
Oh yeah, and the wedding was dry.
I have seen very different weddings as we're an immediate family of about 25 people.
(However, I have to agree that some are pretty strange. I don't think there's anything wrong with having small economical wedding receptions, but when they're even less than that why bother? If they're really breaking the bank why not just invite immediate family? I think people are pressured to invite everyone they know under the sun, and then can't acommodate all of them.)
That being said my niece is getting married in 2 weeks, and is having a church wedding, and a lunch buffet type deal at the church is completely dry). What's odd is that both my niece and the groom drink. So maybe they just wanted the reception there because they liked te fact that it was at the church?
They are having the after party (liquor) at her parents house just for the immediate family.
We have two weddings this weekend and I really hope this doesn't happen to us.
The first wedding is Friday night at 5pm and the second wedding is on Saturday at noon. Both weddings are for DH's cousins. The second wedding is a dry wedding. I'm afraid I might have to bring a flask for the second wedding since I'm expected to deal with DH's family for 2 days in a row...

I posted this earlier on thenest, but my advice is a big purse and a fifth of vodka. Also thought about the CrystalLight2Go packets if they have sodas only. Sprite+Strawberry Lemonade+Vodka=Good time.
I wish I had brought a flask...I sat at a baby shower for a couple of hours prior to the wedding listening to a bunch of conservative nonsense. Then I sat at the wedding and started to listen to it, got annoyed and started with my fun nonsense...which either horrifies people or cracks them up. Vodka would have made it far more fun. I love saying inappropriate things to people who aren't used to hearing them.
A big thank you to Jenn (motherbucker) for entertaining me during the shower! I was also texting my husband and my SIL (across the room from me) the whole time
