Our son was born June 22 weighing 7lbs 6.1oz and 21 1/4 in long. Through all of our ultrasounds and testing they told us everything was fine and he was developing on target. When he was born they noticed a lump on his side when he would cry. After x-ray we learned that little Gavin was born without the 5 bottom ribs on his left side and we were also told he could have a mild case of scoliosis. How in the world the ultrasound didnt catch this IDK being as they are supposed to look at everything bone and organ wise. It is so hard to learn something isnt quite right with your child. He is healthy other wise and i know there are procedures out there that can make him artificial ribs if need be. They told us it wouldnt effect his ability to walk or any of that. We go for a check up tomorrow and to set up our appointment with the genetics doctor to see where we go from here. It is tough not knowing how this is going to play out. I know it could be a lot worse than what it is but it is still difficult especially when we had no clue anything was wrong.
Re: Surprised 2 learn something was wrong....
Hugs. You are right, it is a huge shock at birth to get a diagnosis. We got my sons right after he was born also. It is tough not knowing what is going to happen, so try to just focus on loving him and caring for him, I know it is tough to not focus on the future.
Congratulations on your baby boy!
Sorry you are going through this! Congratulations on your new little one!!
We were surprised completely at birth too when our little guy came out completely floppy. Found out later he has Prader Willi Syndrome - so i definitely feel for you on the entire shock of the process!
Our little guy ended up with really bad scoliosis and at 2 he had surgery to implant a VEPTR device - which essentially stands for titanium ribs - we were told they also do this for kids who are missing a few ribs or have other issues with their ribs. Anyways - it has done wonders for our little guys scoliosis, but I guess the initial purpose of the device was to stabilize deformities of the rib cage. I just wanted to let you know that there is some pretty amazing technology out there these days that really help!
I am so sorry you are dealing with this. Having a baby with unexpected complications is pretty horrible to deal with. Try to stay positive, your little guy is going to amaze you.
And Gavin is a pretty great name
This. Add us to the surprised list as well. There was also a lot of anger thrown in there too.
Just know that you are not alone. Feel free to ask questions on the board. Everyone is very helpful. You also learn a lot about other children's challenges and sometimes those challenges can inform your own.
