Is it supposed to hurt this bad?

Last night DH and I were watching a movie and eating pizza rolls. I started to feel a slight burning in my chest and knew I was getting heartburn, so I got the tums! Well, I still got this horrible heartburn that almost had me in tears. It hurts so bad, and all DH could do was sit and rub my back. I also drank a lot of chocolate milk to try and sooth it (someone told me once that milk helps?) But for about 30 - 45 minutes I had this horrible horrible pain in my chest. Does anyone else get heartburn this bad? If I didn't know any better, I would think I was having a heart attack

  • Ugh. YES! Last night was so bad. I was fine. I went to bed and stayed up almost all night with my throat burning. I also tried milk, but it didn't help.

  • This has so far been my worst symptom.  I was awakened at 4:30 with what felt like a lump in my throat.  Between that and MH snoring, I could not sleep and ended up on the sofa.

From what I understand, not all heartburn is the same.  Sometimes it just comes up a bit and burns where you can't really feel it (and then creates the ump like feeling).  Other times it burns horribly all the way up into your throat.  And other times, you bring a little acid up when you belch.

    All of this sucks.

Hope you get some relief soon.

If it gets REALLY bad, I have heard of OBs prescribing things like Pepcid AC (I think that was the one) but I'm trying to suck it up and live through it without medication (Except TUMS) if I can.

  • I had a few episodes like this about a month ago....and thankfully havent had it since. They all lasted about an hour each and nothing I drank/took really helped...it was just something that went away on its own! I wish I knew exactly what it was because it was different than heartburn to me...but I hope you dont get it again!!

  • yep, when its bad it's BAD! I had the "holy crap, this feels like a heart attack" scenario before also.  i couldn't lie down b/c it made it so much worse. milk doesn't touch mine when it gets to that point.  ask your Dr. about Zyrtec, keep it on hand in case.

Unfortunately, yes.  It isn't every time, thankfully, sometimes I just get a bit of acid stomach feeling, other times it burns really bad.  The absolute worst is when it happens in the middle of the night and wakes me up.  Ugh.

My OB said I could take something like Zantac or Pepcid, but I'm trying to tough it out and just take Tums, but when it gets really bad and keeps me awake, I am very temped.

  • Chocolate gives me the worst heartburn. Also, laying down makes it worse, not better.
  • I'm right there with you.  Try not using chocolate milk, just regular milk.  Also, I find lying down after eating makes for really bad heartburn, so I make sure to sit up for at least an hour or two before relaxing too much after eating.  The acid seems to creep up better when you lie down.  Tums works for me most of the time.  I have also noticed the smoothie tums work the best for me for some reason.  I think it's just something we have to live with but try to minimize for the next few months...

  • I have had this issue and my dr. approve me to take the 75mg tabs of zantac 1x day, and if I really need it I can go to 150mg. It makes 100% difference...I highly recommend asking your dr. Tums just do not cut it.
