Jury Duty-39 weeks

I have been summoned for Jury Duty on July 7. Now my first instinct when I got my notice a few weeks ago was to try to get out of it since it is so close to my due date on the 14th. However, I know that I've had friends who deferred their service only to be called again like 6-12 months later. I'd hate to have to find childcare for LO since I'll be staying at home for a year. So I thought it would be smarter to just accept and go and I might not even be picked to be on a trial anyways and I'll still get counted as going. Even if I do make it to the selection process I plan on just standing up and explaining how my due date is next week and could go into labor any day! Plus, since I have been off (I'm a teacher) I kind of need things to keep me busy and mind off of labor etc. Of course, I don't know what I would do if I go before then...I kind of feel like I'll be one of those unlucky women that go past 40 weeks. Am I crazy?

Re: Jury Duty-39 weeks

  • I went to jury duty 2 weeks ago and they sent me home when I checked in because I was so close to my due date. I thought it'd buy me the 3 years, but no, it was just a regular deferment. Sucks, but it's our civil duty.

  • I got summonded with my first, but had my MW send me over a paper to get out of it.  The only reason I did that is because I would have been 36 weeks pregnant and it was at a court house that was an hour away from where we live!  Otherwise I probably would have done it.

  • I would head in. worst case scenario they send you home. High probability you won't get selected. At least it will be something to pass the time :D
  • I went to Jury duty about 2-3 weeks ago. I was clearly big and pregnant, but that didn't matter. I still went through the process of selection. Honestly, it was only like 3.5 hours and wasn't too bad (they had water and snacks too). I didn't get chosen (which I was glad about). I say just get it over with instead of having to go back again in about 6 months (which is how long they push it back here).

Let's just hope you don't go into labor early! GL!

  • I got called for jury duty literally 2 days after I gave birth. Since I was breastfeeding and recovering from a c-section and a newborn I obviously got a pass. The form also said that they excuse you if you are the sole care provider for young children with nobody to watch them (ie also me)
  • I just got a summons for July 11, I'm due July 4th. I got a doctor note to get out of it, she wrote I'm not available for 6 months. I noticed on the summons there is a box you can check if you don't have childcare available, as an option to defer. I don't know if your state has different rules, but maybe use that as an excuse in the future to continue deferment.

  • Yeah, 99% positive they will send you home. Might as well go and get it over with.
