Cloth Diapering

Is this a good deal on a gently used newborn package and prefold ?'s

It's from a local diaper shop - they are asking $100.83

  • 1 - Thirsties Duo Diaper Size 1 in Melon
  • 1 - Thirsties Duo Diaper Size 1 in Storm
  • 1 - Weehuggers Size 1 in Pistacio - Hook/Loop Closure
  • 8 - Mother-Ease Sandy's in size Newborn (6 -12lbs) Unbleached

I am planning on doing prefolds and covers, with just a couple of AIO's or AI2's, for the first 6 mos.  I am getting ready to place my order with GMD and have a couple of questions.  My plan was to get 36 orange and 24 yellow edge prefolds plus 5 each of the yellow and orange workhouse fitted.  Is that too many?  Not enough?  Is there another fitted that I should be looking at instead?  I am also looking at Thirsties Duo and Bummis Whisper Wraps for covers.  Again, is there something else out that you like better?  I have also been looking around at wool covers for overnights.  Do you start using those when they are fresh out of the oven or when they are a couple of months old so this isn't something I need to get ASAP?  Any suggestions or input would be much appreciated.  Big Smile

Hmm... not sure thats the best price for the used diaper- the newborn sandies alone would be $86 brand new, $25 for the 2 Thirsties covers and then $19 for the weehuggers so you are really only getting them for a $30 discount and if you factor in the fact that you can almost always get at least 10% off or a free diaper of some sorts from most major cloth diaper retailers you really aren't saving even that much.  I would probably pass.

As for the amount of diapers for a newborn, I think a good number is 36.  Maybe 24 prefolds and a dozen easier diapers for overnights and outings?  Anywhere from 6 to 10 covers would be good depending on how many of the diapers you purchase need covers.  Probably 7 to 9 would be a good number for 30ish diapers that need covers.

As for wool, I'm a HUGE fan of it now but I hated it when he was little because his poo almost always leaked out onto the cover so I was stuck handwashing the wool all the time.  I may use it this time for overnight over fitteds but keep in mind that you are almost changing a newborn just as often during the day as you do at night.  I changed Nolan every time he woke to eat until he was only waking once a night (then I just left the same diaper on him).  I recommend the "easy" diapers like fitteds or AIOs at night only because you are so sleepy that its mildly annoying to deal with prefolds in the middle of the night working on little to no sleep.

  • I'd pass too - but on the newborn comment -

We have 32 prefolds and wash every other day, and usually have plenty left depending on the time of day I wash.  I have fitteds for overnight that I use with wool interlock soakers and love it, but we've only been doing this since about 3-4 weeks of age when we started getting 3-4 hour stretches at night.  I have 4 fitteds I really like and a few I'm not much on but use with doublers so we use 2-3 each night (I change at every feed or if she wakes up wet).  I'm using wool today with prefolds but LO is breast and formula fed and her poo is not runny.
