I think overall you will find that Jason is a WAY more popular name in general. It's been around a lot longer as a popular name so there are many more people out there with that name than with Mason, even though Mason has been growing the last few years. I personally like Mason better too and we almost used it for DS #1, we can't use it for #2 because it is too close to DS's name - Carson.
My son's name is Mason and I actually never come across other boys with the same name. Obviously there are but I don't think it's so popular that you'll hear it all over the place.
Jason is a perfectly respectable name with a distinguished history, but it sounds so '80s to me. Whenever I meet a Jason, I am surprised that he is not wearing acid-washed jeans and neon sunglasses. See also: Justin.
