Natural Birth

I don't really know where to ask this...

Right now baby is breech and I'm trying not to panic but its hard not to.  I am really looking forward to a natural birth this time around (water broke with first, then pitocin, then epi last time) :(.  Anyways I DO NOT want a c-sec, so I'm trying to do some research on my options if LO doesn't turn on his own.  Has anyone had the moxibustion (acupuncture) or the webster tech (chiropractor) done?  What is successful, how many visits, any other helpful information would be great.

*Oh and I'm pretty sure at my hospital they won't let you try for a natural breech birth.

Re: I don't really know where to ask this...

  • i'm sure it's hard not to get worked up about it.

the good news is that baby has about 6 or 7 weeks with plenty of room to turn! breech isn't something to be concerned about until 37/38 weeks.

hypnosis is extremely effective in turning breech babies. in a study of breech babies, more than 80% turned (and stayed turned) using hypnotherapy, where as fewer than 50% turned in the control group. additionally, many of the control group babies who turned vertex, turned back to breech before birth.

www.spinningbabies.com also has guidance on turning a breech baby.

i don't know anyone personally who has had a breech baby turn with either moxibustion or webster technique, but i've read stories here about them both, as well as manual version (which would be my last resort).

  • Feel free to start trying things now, but your LO still has lots of time to turn.  My SIL's baby turned on his own between 37 & 38 weeks.  She did a modified breech tilt on the couch a few times but that was it.  The spinningbabies website has lots of things you can try to get the baby to flip.  I know it's hard, but try not to worry.  Good luck!

  • Based upon experiences that friends have had, I would recommend moxibustion and/or the webster technique.
  • I haven't researched this extensively at all but I ran across some stuff a while back about versions (manually turning baby externally) and it was pretty creepy so I looked for alternatives.  I would google that.  I think you do have plenty of time for baby to turn on his own but there were things like hot and cold compresses (to encourage baby to turn toward the favorable temperature) and massage.  I hope he turns and you don't have to worry about it!  They can u/s you up to the point of delivery to see if he's turned on his own.

  • I've done moxibustion, acupuncture, exercises, hypnobabies, visualization, music, flashlight, and pulsatilla CH6. She got very busy in there, got to transverse position, but then went back to kinda breech (sitting diagonally). So at about 38 weeks, we ended up resorting to an external version (which was a mild version, mixed with acupuncture for relaxation and it worked out great, thankfully), for fear of her already being to big to flip on her own (plus, my amniotic fluid was on the low side) and ending up getting to big to be safely flipped externally.

Anyway, my doula (who was doing my moxibustion and acupuncture sessions) said that her rule of thumb was doing about five sessions of acupuncture (I was doing moxibustion everyday and acupuncture every other day), so in the end we ended up wainting for a week. I wish we could've given my baby more time, but we were indeed reaching a point in which we had to either do the version or sit back and wait for the best and I felt like she was really trying but not being able to, so...

How far along are you? How much amniotic fluid do you have? Try everything on the book, your chances are good!

Good luck and all the best!

Thanks for your response, I will definitely try the external version if it comes to but I still have a while before that.  Its still early for me and I hope we will flip on his own but I figured the earlier I get started the better.  I wanted to avoid your problem with not having enough time to give one particular method its optimal time.  I started seeing a chiropractor last week and will see him 2 times a week until he flips then once a week to keep him head down (if that works).  Thats all I'm doing right now except for visualization and swimming, I have a OB appt next Tues. and I will confirm his position (he moves around so much its hard to be sure).  At that point I will discuss adding some additional techniques with my midwife.

Oh - Embarrassed - I just saw you are 31 weeks on your siggy (how did I miss that before? LOL). You are on an even better position than I thought!

Well, good luck and please keep us posted! Loads of flipping vibes coming your way!

  • I was breech and my midwife suggested I sit on a birthing ball and lean forward so my elbows were on my knees. Oh boy did my little man not like it when I did that - did it for two nights in a row for about 30 minutes and he was turned. It is naturally more comfortable for them when their head is down so get into positions that really reduces the room in your uterus and baby will move. I was told not to lay down unless I was going to bed and always sit upright slightly leaning forward - worked like a charm :)
