Frequent urination in a boy?

DS's pee is usually incredibly regular ... about once an hour in the morning, and after naps, a little less often in the afternoon.  The last two days he has been going small amounts VERY frequently... the longest stretch has been 30 minutes, but most often every 10-20 minutes, and sometimes 5!  He's also been sleeping horribly the same timeframe, waking up every half hour very distressed (I keep him in the same nightime diaper, but I assume it's when he's going).  His temp (underarm) is 99.5.  He has not been drinking more or less than usual, but his poops are definitely pretty firm.

I called the doc, and they informed me that "it isn't a temperature" if it's under 100, even if it's under the arm, and that "it's probably the room temperature," even though it has been dramatically cooler the last two days.  They suggested I give him more to drink and see if that makes any difference.

Anyone heard of anything that would cause this?  Should I be worried?  I can't tell if it hurts him to pee... besides the nightime thing, he's been generally resistant just the last two days if I ask him to go, and has actually wimpered once, but doesn't make any sounds when he's going in his pants.

  • Whether it's a temperature or not, it sounds like something is definitely up with your little man!  Peeing that often is not normal for anyone.  He sounds like he's heading towards miserable!  My first guess would be a bladder infection.  Is cranberry juice too acidic for someone his age?  If not, maybe that will help (I know you usually try to avoid juice, though).  I'd also recommend yogurt, since probiotics and acidophilus can help with that.  I have a good naturopath you can call, too, if your pedi doesn't think anything is wrong.

  • Just call your doc back and tell them that you want them to do a urine sample.   Sounds like a bladder infection to me.

Although I'm intrigued to know how you know he's peeing that often.

Thanks, all.  He is back at about 45min - 1hr apart this morning, so I'm going to moniter and see if this was a two day fluke before we go in.  I've heard that reaction to food can cause frequent urination... here's hoping.  I've collected a pee sample just in case.

We've been doing elimination communication about a month, so he's for the most part in cloth trainers vs. diapers.  We've had great luck getting 99% of poos and maybe 75% of pees in the potty... when they were an hour apart.  Now that he's got these crazy pees, it's pretty easy to see when he's wet (and I've had to do a lot of laundry).  :)
