Just decided to CD...need lots of help and info please!

Someone recommended that I visit your board and ask a few questions about CDing.  I have attempted to look online (for hours) for this info but every site says something different, I'm hoping you can make things more concrete for me! I want to purchase the right products but have no clue where to start.

So we decided to CD to avoid the chemicals found in disposables.  That being said, convenience is still very important to us as we are very busy and I want to spend every free minute with my daughter and not doing laundry, etc. if I can avoid it.  Here are a *few* of the questions I have and any help/info would be SO appreciated!!!

So if you were to start out new, what type of CD's would you buy/how many and how do you know which covers go with which diapers?  It's all so confusing.

Do you reuse the covers all day or change them with each diaper change because they get soiled?

If you wash your own CDs, is there a way to do it without having to dunk them in the toilet/use a wet bucket?  I just don't see that being realistic for us.

What about a diaper service, are the diapers any different quality?  Would it save alot of time?

Thanks so much for your help!

Tiffany

Re: Just decided to CD...need lots of help and info please!

  • There are several nesties with info in their bios which is really helpful.  I can quickly answer some of your ?'s.

     - right now we're using KL0's (Kissaluv size 0's) - they are a fitted diaper which require a cover.  We like them - we have 24 KL0s and 5 covers, which seems to work pretty well for us - I do laundry every other day.  They get really wet, but we haven't really had any problems with leaks, so all in all, I'd recommend them.  A lot of people like Bum Genius 3.0's for when DC is a bit bigger.  I've been having some problems with them leaking, but it may just be too early for DS.  They're a pocket diaper.

    -  You can generally use any cover with any prefold or fitted diaper, although people think certain ones work better in certain combinations - a lot of that has to do with your DC.  I really like our thirsties covers, and if I had to do it again, would get mostly thristies covers and a super whisper wrap. You can reuse covers as long as they don't get poop on them, although they can get a little wet and I generally rotate them out so they can air out in between diaper changes.

    - You don't need to dunk your diapers.  Breast fed poop is water soluble, so you can put it directly in the washer.  Otherwise, you just need to scrap/dump the solids in the toilet.  I am thinking of using flushable liners when we get to that point to make that even easier (I'm a cheater), at least when its the 'peanut butter poop' stage which I've heard so much about.

    - With a diaper service, you will have some added chemicals - probably chlorine at least.  It would save time, but to be honest, I've found that it doesn't take a lot to keep up with the diaper laundry.  You get used to it. Services mainly do prefold diapers.

     Hope that helps!

  • If money was no option, I would buy all AIOs (All in One's) diapers.  They are about $15-20/diaper and you use them just like you would a sposie (disposable diaper) You can just throw them in the washer  and dry on high heat.  Super easy way to go.  Happy Heinies makes a one size that "grows with the baby" depending on how you snap it.

You can reuse covers if they are only soiled w/ urine.  Just wipe them down and resuse.  You cannot reuse if they have feces on them.

If you breastfeed, you can just throw them in the washer.  You can also buy a sprayer to attach to your sink to wash out the waste and you can skip the wetbucket.  get your sprayer on ebay-they are cheap.

Diaper services are rare.  There aren't any in my neck of the woods, so it may be a moot point.

    Best of luck!

  • I have a 'bio' that I can email you if you want that has a ton of information and pictures that would probably help.

Thanks for all of the information!  At least I have some direction now!  Sometimes having too many options is not a good thing.

  • I have had a long time to plan and decide what to get, but I have only been able to make decisions by searching and searching. Thankfully there are so many people here who are able to help you (I wasn't on this board last year when I first started researching CD). I haven't been able to try any cloth diapers that I have (or have on my list yet to buy) but many here have.

Some websites that I have still found to be VERY helpful as far as learning what's available, advice from others, how to care for diapers, etc. are the following:

    diaperswappers.com
pinstripesandpolkadots.com (apparently down temporarily because of a death in the family)

As far as places that I've bought from:

    jilliansdrawers.com
    lilbunz.com
    squishytushy.com
    diaperswappers.com
cottonbabies.com (I think I have made a purchase here..if not, I've planned on it several times)

There are sooo many other places. I started the list in my favorites last year and now that I'm searching for dipes again, I've found several more places to buy recently. Prices are all about the same unless you are buying used.

I have a purchased a lot of gently used diapers & covers to save on cost until we know what works for us. I have a "shopping list" that we are using to make sure we have enough to fit baby through the first month or so of CD until we know exactly what works for us. For us, this list includes several prefolds with 2-3 different brands of covers, snappi fasteners, Kissaluvs fitteds, Kissaluvs contours, BumGenius 2.0 (bought last year) and 3.0, one Happy Heiny, one Fuzzi Bunz, cloth wipes, wipes solution, wet bag, and pail liner.

After we get started CD, I will have a better idea what works for me, baby, and DH. DH will likely love the easiest dipes to use, and hopefully those will be what fits baby best. Once we know, then we will stock up in the favorites.

Hope you get lots of good info. I plan on checking in on it all myself. Have fun!

  • what type of CD's would you buy/how many and how do you know which covers go with which diapers?

We went with pf's. They're cheap, easy to use, never had a leak, no problems with repelling, natural fibers, I could go on and on. There is a small learning curve at first but after that it's super simple. I would recommend the cloth-eez pf's from gmd because the sizing is better. We have probably 40+ pf's and do laundry every 3 days - that's actually another reason I love pf's they're cheap enough that I can have a ton and not worry about doing laundry too often.

As for covers, it's sort of your preference. Some people end up with really hard to fit babies, but so far I can't run into a diaper or cover that didn't work on DD. We had 4 nb prorap covers (plenty) and 6 bsww covers in size small (more then you really need). She still wears the same pf's and small covers she did when she was 1 month old.

Do you reuse the covers all day or change them with each diaper change because they get soiled?

I rotate my covers - put one on, let it air dry while she's in another one. I don't throw them in to be washed unless they get poop on them or they've been used for a day or two.

is there a way to do it without having to dunk them in the toilet/use a wet bucket?

We don't dunk or use a wet bucket. We have a wet bag (it's not wet it just contains moisture) in a garbage can they all go in. We don't have solid poo yet though so everything just goes in the wash.

What about a diaper service, are the diapers any different quality?  Would it save alot of time?

I think their diaper quality would be great. It's probably going to be pf's and covers. I'm guessing it would save some time, and if you can afford it maybe try it out for a few months and see how you like it.
