Does anyone else have a slightly open cervix?

My new OB gave me a pelvic exam and said my cervix was slightly open.  She said she wasn't too worried about it, but she wants me to have a low threshold for calling in about cramping and pressure.  Has anyone else experienced this???

Re: Does anyone else have a slightly open cervix?

  • What does she mean by slightly open?  It is possible that the lower end of your cervix can be slightly open (the end closer to the entrance to your vagina) and the upper end be closed up tight (the end closer to your uterus).  This is still a closed cervix and unless it was open enough at the lower end for her to stick her whole finger up and through your cervix she can't call it open, although I have seen even doctors frequently make this mistake.  Either way, follow your doctors instructions.

  • I have heard of some moms that have had a few kids have that going on. I am sure that its just your anatomy unless the Doc tells you different. Smile

  • Yes, I asked my OB about this and she said it happens that a woman (especially one who has had children) can have a slightly open/dilated cervix. Did yours tell you how much yours is open? I do believe (but could be wrong) that the vaginal end of the cervix is open but the side within the uterus is closed..my monthly ultrasounds look for funneling within the uterus and cervical length. I have yet to have a manual check for the vaginal opening. I was told they will start at my 28 week appt.

She didn't get real specific with me.  She just told me that she wasn't too worried, and that many women that have had children have this issue.  However, I have not had any children.  I did, however, have a D&C 2.5 months prior to getting pregnant again.  She said this is probably why.  I suppose I won't worry too much, and I am having an ultrasound for growth check on July 6, so that may clear the air too.

  • I always ask for all the specifics-but some Drs don't say much. A friend of mine walked around for a month 2 cm dilated without feeling a thing the whole time (near her due date). I also had a D&C 3 mths b4 this preg and had a cervical freezing done but my OB isnt too concerned with those. More concerned that the twins will bring on PTL.  I dont think the u/s will tell you how much you have dilated vaginally(again i maybe wrong) but just call the OB, it will be in your records if you are curious. Good luck!
