Low Amniotic Fluid

So, I went in today for my 23 week checkup which included an u/s because there were a few heart structures they weren't able to see the first time (due to baby's position).  At our a/s (19 wks), everything looked great with our baby.  Today, the tech was able to see the necessary parts of her heart, which were fine.  *But,* now the u/s is showing that my "amniotic fluid is a little low."  So, they want me back in one week to check on that.  The OB said that considering that things were fine 4 weeks ago, this will probably end up being fine too.  She thought that baby might have just been in an unfortunate position for optimal amniotic fluid measurement today.

I'm trying not to worry... but does anyone have any information about this problem?  I didn't think to mention this until after I left my appointment... but I literally went straight from a 45-minute physical therapy session in a 85 degree pool to my u/s appt.  It's not like I sweat during PT or anything... but I can't help but wonder if maybe I was just a little dehydrated this morning.

I realize that no one can give me any sort of medical advice.  As I said, I just wonder if anyone else has encountered this problem?  Thanks!

Re: Low Amniotic Fluid

  • I had low amniotic fluid with our daughter.  I think it was later in pregnancy though, around 30 weeks.  They just monitored it with u/s's and when it got to a point where it was below a certain level they did a csection the next day.  She was born 15 days early and healthy.  She was very small when born though not sure if related.  6lbz and 18 inches.

This may sound annoyingly obvious but I was just reading a research article last night about low amniotic fluid. It stated that a most obvious yet never suggested solution is to considerably up your pure water intake (not flavored or tea etc.) That you should always be getting at least a gallon but if you are having problems with low amniotic fluid you should strive for a gallon and a half! I have never experianced this but it was the article I read so I thought I would share it! Good luck!

I was going to say the same thing. I have known people on the boards to have low measurements and drink lots of water and go back and its fine. Maybe you were a little dehydrated.

  • I have also heard of the link between being dehydrated & having low fluid. Try to drink more water & GL in a week !
