Similac

Ok, so several of you mentioned you changed from Similac when they recalled this... this is the first I am hearing about this, so it has perked my interest....

LO's doctor put him on Similac from the start (we were forced to supplement from the beginning due to his high levels of jaundice)... and then after his 1 month appt they suggested we switch to Sensitive due to his fussiness - and it has helped a lot.

Does Target have a "sensitive" formula? Is this something we should check with the doc before making the change (we go next week for 2 month check up)?

Re: Similac

  • you can ask your dr, but most will tell you generic formulas are fine. They all have to meet the same nutritional standards. so unless your LO has reealllly specific dietary needs, generic formulas should work just fine for you. and yes, I am almost positive Target makes a sensitive formula.

  • Target should have a comparable Similar "senstive" version, they did for Enfamil gas formula.

Just mix the two slowly and see if your LO reacts.  It should be fine.  Your doctor probably gets benefits for recommending similac, so he may be inclined to discourage you from switching to a generic.

  • Similac was recalled, maybe a year ago now???  The recall was due to a manufacturing error... There were bug parts in the formula and it could causing gastro-insestinal distress.

All of the generic brands have a sensitive and a soy version.  The only thing I didn't see in generic form was the preemie (extra calorie) version.

The FDA tightly regulates the actve ingredients in formulas.  The only difference between brands are the inert (non-active/filler) ingredients.  Sometimes switching from one brand to another can cause a problem if one of the inert ingredients is something your child has an intolerance for.  However, usually switching from the brand to the generic is fine. There may be a slight difference in taste.

If you want too, I am sure you could call your ped's office and ask them about switiching to generic. Honestly, I would give them a big old side-eye if they told you not too UNLESS your child has some complex health issues and they don't want to risk the small possibility of causing or increasing gut issues.

  • Lo's pediatrician said the recalled items are no longer on shelves.

  • I am planning on switching to a store brand after we finish our massive supply of similac.

I was checking target's formula's a few weeks ago, they seem to have a large selection.

That is true.  I don't think anyone was trying to say that the recall was current, and if I gave that impression I am sorry.

My original point was that when the recall was happening (last year) we were forced to switch.  We chose to go with the Target Brand.  DD had no problem with the switch and we ended up saving A LOT of money.
