Heart Murmur

So, I went to my endrocronologist today for a follow up appointment during my pregnancy, and he informed me that I have a slight heart murmur. He said that it's normal for pregnant women to get this during their pregnancy. Does anyone else have this? He didn't seem to worried about it....but, I plan to ask my gyno next week as well.

I was born with one, which eventually corrected itself.  So...not the same situation, but I just wanted to give you an example where it was harmless.

I've had one my whole life and I have NO issues.  I have been pretty athletic my whole life (college rower) and marathoner and I've never had issues.  I am sure that you are more than fine!

A heart murmur results from turbulent flow of blood in the heart, so it sounds different than a normal beat, but it doesn't indicate the reason for the murmur. If you haven't been diagnosed with a murmur before, it could happen now because of the significant expansion in blood volume and increased cardiac work load that occurs in pregnancy. Definitely ask your OB, but don't worry about it now.

Thanks for the detailed info. I will definitely have my gyno look into this for me as well....I wonder if this is the reason I've been having to take an extra deep breath every so often or sometimes have hard time breathing.

I have a murmur and have not had any problems so far.  OB didn't seem concerned so I haven't been either.

Great, accurate explanation! I've had a heart murmur my whole life and the symptoms have gotten more noticeable since I've been pregnant (slight tugging and aching feelings). I've talked with my OB and have seen a cardiologist (who performed an echocardiogram), and everything is just fine! )

I was born with a heart murmur and mitral valve prolapse, as well as all of my brothers.  We're all fine- we used to have to get premedicated with antobiotics before getting dental work, b/c there was a fear that plaque could be injested and make its way to the heart, but the latest research says premedicating is unnecessary- the MVP isn't a serious enough heart condition to warrant excessive antibiotic intake.

Also, at my last cardio appt, the doctor said that my murmur was minimal and the MVP was correcting itself after all these years- so you never know! I would occassionally get some tightening in the chest during gym or sports and need a little break and some water, but it was never serious.

I have a murmer and mitrovalve prolapse too and Im a marathon runner and it does not affect me at all. I needed antibitoics prior to getting dental work but I think they just found out it was not necessary.

I have had a heart murmur my whole life and have always been really atletic- I also was a college rower! It has never bothered me and my doctor is not worried about it.
