A question about eye floaters- saw the post below and freaked

So I've had occasional eye floaters over the years, but never any problems. A few days ago I was getting in the shower and after I pulled my shirt over my head I suddenly was seeing literally dozens of floaters but instead of little dark spots they were like little pinpoints of light floating upward. I am a complete hypochondiac so in an attempt to keep myself from panicking I sat down immediately and called DH in. I was not dizzy or weak or anything else, and they went away after about 30-60 seconds. My BP has been perfect this entire pregnancy. I called my mom (a nurse) about it and she said to just rest for a few minutes but if I still felt normally and they did not return not to worry. I forgot to mention this at my appointment today, but my BP was again fine today and I have not had any physical symptoms since that happened.

Should I be worried and/or call my doctor's office about this? Or is that the hypochondriac crazy person talking?

  • You aren't over reacting. As a FTM I worried all the time too. I think u are fin though since you aren't having symptoms anymore. I had the scary aura vision last PG and really freaked my eye doctor out, but once she saw my pressure was fine, she wasn't worried. It was annoying and terrifying while it lasted though.

  • Let me prefis this by saying that I haven't yet talked to my doctor about this (I have an appt tomorrow and I will ask her)...

I was experiencing the same thing. I did some searches and it looks like a fairly normal occurence in pregnancy - drinking water helped me.

I'll let you know what I hear back from my doc tomorrow.

  • I had these all of the time in both of pregnancies.

Dr. said as long as everything checked out just fine it had something to do with your current state of balance and eyes adjusting. So in a nutshell, no big deal.

  • I get it too.  Sometimes it looks like a bunch of little black bugs running around.  It only last a few seconds.  I've never thought to ask my dr I've only had it happen like 3 times, and my blood pressure is always fine at the drs office.

  • I also think it depends on how long you have them for. If you have them for a bit and they go away like yours did then I think it's fine. I think the concern is if they stick around and don't leave and are combined with other symptoms. I think that's what my MW said awhile back when I asked about it anyway.

I had this exactly!! And the "black bugs" is exactly how I described it to the doctor! It has literally only happened twice, and for maybe 30 seconds each. my doctor said it was normal. The fact that my vision in general seems a little different is also normal. I can still see just fine, but some things just don't seem as sharp. Normal. Pregnancy just messes with you.

Glad I'm not alone.  The first time I had them I was like wtf I seriously thought there were black bugs flying around my bathroom lol.

  • Thanks everyone! I feel a lot better about this now. I appreciate everyone being so nice with my tendency to freak out!

  • I've had this too... three times throughout my pregnancy I've "seen stars" for about 30 seconds in the shower... crazy pregnancy.

  • I experienced this about 5 days after giving birth to my LO. Called the on call DR and they had me come in to do testing.

Glad I went in  - turns out I had pre-eclampsia only I had it AFTER I delivered.

My levels were all off and I was very sick. I had to be re-admitted into the hospital. It was awful. I'm just glad I listened to my instinct that something was off.

I was trying to say that maybe I had taken pain meds on an empty stomach. But I knew something was off.

I too had perfect blood pressure throughout my pregnancy. Doctors say that there is a small percent of woman who can be pre-eclamptic but it's never caught because they don't have the initial trigger signs of high BP.

Next pregnancy I'll have to be closely monitored. Go get your enzyme levels checked. BP is not the only level that indicates pre-eclampsia.
