Sucking on sleeves?

My 5 y/o sucks on his sleeves. This is a new and really gross habit. Anyone??? I don't know what to do but he is ruining his shirts. It's gross.

lol..if it makes you feel better, my good friend has a little boy (2 y/o) who pulls the fuzz off his blanket and sticks it up his nose hehe...

You know the tank top thing would work minus the Seattle factor. I wanted to send him to school in short sleeves but I thought, ya know, he has flat out told me he doesn't wear a jacket for recess so I thought he might freeze. Fuzz up the nose...I might actually be happy with the sleeve sucking.

My MIL has a friend who stuck a piece of sponge up his nose and it was there for months. His mom finally took him to the Dr. because he had a weird smell coming from him. Ewww.....?

Have him wear an old one and put tabasco on the sleaves and see if he still does it. That is what they did to my 4 year old nephews binki.

Um might not want to go the tabasco route as then can you see him wiping his face with his sleeve and getting tabasco in his eyes!  What about setting up some sort of reward system that he gets a prize if he doesn't chew on his sleeve?  Or if he goes so many days in a row during the week he gets to do something fun on the weekend?

I actually remember both my brothers sucking on their sleeves.  My older brother did it for like 3 years!

reward systems work. we have one going right now for eating veggies. we have done this in the past but you can only do so many. it might however be my only shot.?

ALEX DID THAT!!  And he's suck/chew on the top rim of his shirts too - and it started about Kindergarten too

I was told it's a nervous habit, like chewing on your finger nails...

Security and Maturity are the only ways to solve it.

It took about two years for Alex to grow out of it - because he had to be mature enough to catch himself since they are unaware they are doing it.

Once he was aware I let him know, when you ruin a shirt with chewing/sucking on it - it's now trash.

But we had MANY MANY ruined shirts til then and I still see little holes pop up every now and again

PS!!  And his 1st grade teacher said it was VERY common and she had a lot of boys who did it

Laura-Thanks for the response. The little girl up the street did it too. I can see if he is doing while in deep thought or when he is in school which and be a bit stressful. I chewed my finger nails. I am leaning towards the waiting it out but it drives DH crazy.?
